Norse pagan handfasting...

Taylor, on August 27, 2021 at 5:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
I'm having a Norse pagan handfasting in May but some of our guests don't quite know what they are coming to. I'd like to include a card with the invitations to explain a handfasting, the colors and symbols. I'm not quite sure how to phrase it. If anyone has and advice I'm all ears thank you.

I don't think you need to include anything in your invites. You could simply have your officiant explain the process as you move forward..."and now the couple will join hands as a symbol of the couple freely giving themselves to this marriage..." and so forth.

    I think it's a beautiful ceremony idea!

I agree with Veronica. People are unlikely to remember what they read (if they read it - a lot of people ignore inserts - sigh) with your invitation - some people will, but not all or even most - especially if you're getting specific with color meanings, etc.

I would either have your officiant indicate meanings as they go through the steps with you or I would have programs printed so people can follow along (it doesn't have to be much, just a half sheet for each guest (or family - H and I usually only get one to share when we go to a wedding with programs) explaining what you would have sent with the invitation.

You don't need anyone to have specifics. We are doing a Norse handwashing as well (my husband is Norwegian). Our officiant will explain the meaning behind everything as she goes.

I've never heard of this but I agree with everyone else. It will be so much better for the officiant to explain as you go.

Hi ! I really don't think that you should consider it as a "Norse pagan handfasting" - it will be your ceremony, that's all! It's so popular in Europe, I would never calla it "pagan".. .

What if they are pagan though?

Also, OP I'm assuming you're part of the Norse culture?

Edited to add, I think these questions have to do with cultural appropriation.
