Nontraditional Registry Ideas

caseyjc, on April 27, 2014 at 10:22 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Hi Ladies! I'm wondering your opinion on the wedding registry. The FH and I have been living together for 2 years and have accumulated a lot of things - really anything I'd register for would be non-essentials. I'm worried that if I register at a few places, I'm going to have more stuff than I'll know what to do with! I know registering for cash/honeymoon assistance is tacky because my Grandma outright said that recently - so that's out of the question.

What are you ladies doing for your registries if you really have all the things you need?

We still registered at BBB because we wanted upgrades. Most of the stuff in the house is mine and we wanted stuff that was "ours."

Some girls have registered on Amazon.com - and you can get lots of different things there!

We just registered for a ton of upgrades - nicer china, cookware, etc. We're considering donating our older stuff to make room, plus its fairly nice stuff.

You can always register for items you would like for the wedding. Ie. cake knife and server, toasting glasses, garter, ring bearer pillow. Or items for the honeymoon. For instance if your going to the beach, beach bag with towels, sunscreens, lotions, hats, etc.

We registered for camping equipment at REI. It has been very popular with our guests. People like buying non-essential items a lot more than they like purchasing sheets and towels for some reason.

I registered at Macys for some upgrades to the current kitchen things I have.

We also registered on Amazon and we added things like gift cards to the restaurants we'd like to go to on our honeymoon.

We registered at myregistry.com for gift cards to restaurants, local venues and other experience items like cooking classes together in addition to upgrades on items we had. Also cookbooks we could use together. Do you have nice luggage? If not you could register for that too.

Are you wine drinkers? I had a friend register at a local wine store. On our website we listed stores and restaurants we go to.

Were registering for our honeymoon. I'm sure there will be people who think it's rude, but I think it's fine. I've done it for friends in the past and it hasn't even crossed my kind as rude. The last thing we need is ANOTHER coffee pot or MORE serving bowls. I think as couples are marrying later and later in life, we don't need household items like we would have if we were 20. Do what you want girl, it's your day!!

We went ahead and registered for upgrades. We also did a honey fund for the honeymoon. The older group of people who want to get us a traditional gift have that option while people who want to give cash can choose what they want us to put that cash towards like plane tickets or the resort. That way everyone is happy! Hopefully anyways.

We registered for upgrades and a few nicer small appliances that we wouldn't buy ourselves. We also kept in mind that we could return/exchange stuff.

Make a small registry for things you want upgraded. Don't register a lot of places. Maybe do a second place for your friends - like Amazon that can be more whimsical, finally, if you keep the registry small, many people will get the hint and give cash.

I registered at target and that's the one I just let everyone know about. but we didn't register for things like dishes and all that, things like the new video games we like.

for some of my friends who get it and aren't offended, I'm going to register at a adult store for some toys that I like Smiley smile

We thought the same thing. that we literally have everything. which we do, but i promise you if you go into BBB with a registry clicker you will find stuff that you need! and really find stuff that you want. sit down and make a list of things that could use an upgrade that arent too expensive. like a lot of people have crazy mis matched silverware, or a really old yucky toaster, or raggedy hand towels, a 5$ hand mixer that could be upgraded to a 50$ one, a glassware set that 4 have been broken over the years and u want a complete set again, BBB has TONS of kitchen gadgets that are so awesome, a new cutlery block, stuff like that!! it really wasnt that bad and we only had like 40 items on ours when it was all said and done but thats ok!

FH and I have been together for 6.5 years and lived together for 6. We own our home and have everything we need, however, we wanted to replace some things, We wanted a new knife block, new silverware, new dishes, a KitchenAid mixer, etc.

We registered at Kohl's and Amazon and got almost everything (plus more) that we asked for.

Make a small registry and you will get a lot of cash (everyone knows cash is always an option!). Also register for upgrades. I'm only 24, but have been living on my own since 18 and am upgrading all of my stuff from the cheapo stuff to the nicer looking and better quality. My extras I will sell to college students (my younger brother and cousin) and donate.

If you're only looking to register for the wedding, I would suggest a small registry of upgrades or non-traditional items (games, camping gear, etc.). If you're having a shower, how about a theme, like stock the bar?

@pezzy "finally, if you keep the registry small, many people will get the hint and give cash."

not necessarily. when some people see a small registry like that they just give the couple something cheap off the registry.

when my cousin got married she tried that by registering at a place of fine china and nothing on that list was less than 75 dollars, this was about 20 years ago. when she told my mom that the registry was to get help paying for her china, and if people didn't buy from that she'd get the cash to get the china.

what she got from my mom was a 15 dollar electric knife. and a lot of people wouldn't speak to her after that.

they shouldn't have reacted that way, but I personally don''t care for game playing. if you really need cash, or want gift cards then be honest. I'd respect that a lot more than trying to give hints. there's a lot of opinions about registries so who knows what the right answer is. seems like you tick people off no matter what.
