Non-traditional timelines

Stefanie, on August 16, 2021 at 1:06 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

Hi everyone!

I am solidifying my timeline for my wedding day for my photographer/videographer and needed some help. I looked up timelines for weddings and I don't know if I like the way they flow.

For reference I am using a video package that will probably be 8 hours so from 2pm to 10pm with my ceremony to reception time running from 5:30pm to 11pm. (Note: I am getting makeup and hair done off site since I have a small party and travel fees were soooo expensive so I will be all dolled up when video/photographers arrive)

I want to get in the cake cutting, the first dances and toasts. Now their timeline suggests that the parents dances happen after dinner. But, I remember my cousin's taking place after her first dance with her husband? Anyone else do this? Or recommend a good way for everything to flow so I can get everything into the video?

Thanks in advance!!!! Smiley heart

Do you plan on doing the first dance before or after dinner? I've seen both, but whether first dance is before or after dinner I normally have seen parent dances after first dances. It's really up to you.

    Thanks so much!!

Any ideas about toasts as well?

Website recommends after dinner, but not sure if it will work better before?

I've usually seen (and what we did) first dance done right after intro into reception and then parent dances right after. Toasts have usually been during dinner since everyone is seated. We had the salad course plated already when guests sat down, and they listened to the toasts while eating the salad.

We are doing dinner and then all dances and festivities (shoe game, cake cutting, etc) our dj knows his family pretty well and we have been to weddings they did not eat before dances and every one was starving and cranky so we prefer to eat first and then do everything else

We're doing out first dance right after our reception entrance, then dinner, then the parent dances (as people are finishing eating) so it's not super awkward to open the dance floor after dinner--it'll transition from parent dances to open dancing. We aren't doing toasts at the wedding. I don't think it matters either way, whatever you feel is best for your evening. I definitely remember my oldest sister doing dinner first, then first dance, parent dances, cake cutting, and then opening the dance floor.

Hello ! We had our dance after the main course, then we did some dancing with everyone, and the cake entered the room at that moment...

For my wedding, we were introduced into the reception space. We immediately went into our first dance. Then we did father/daughter dance, mother/son dance, and cut our cake. My husband wore his dress blue uniform and was changing into a tux so we wanted to have all that done in his blues that's why we did it that way. After that, dinner was served, we had the speeches and so on. i was initially not in favor of cutting the cake right away (we did it before dinner), but it worked out really well!!!
