Non Sappy Songs for Joint Father/Daughter & Mother/Son Dance

Aquarius89, on January 15, 2015 at 11:50 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

So my fiance and I have been considering doing a combined father/daughter and mother/son dance instead of having them split up. While my fiance and his mother have a very good relationship, the one between myself and my father is a bit more complicated...maybe tense is a better term. That being said, I'm having trouble finding a song that isn't overly sappy and would leave me rolling my eyes the whole time.

The only song I've found that I felt could work was Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles. I figure it can be interpreted in a multitude of ways so that it can fit each of our relationships with the parent we will be dancing with.

I was hoping for some thoughts regarding us using this song for our joint parent dance and also any suggestions. Smiley smile

I think "Here Comes the Sun" is a great song, but not sure about dancing to it. I don't think every single lyric of the song you choose needs to be super specific to the scenario. That said, I think a standard/do-wop/classic R&B number would probably be good. Maybe a "My Girl" (Temptations)/"My Guy" (Mary Wells) mashup? Or "The Way You Look Tonight" - Sinatra's version? You have a better idea of the personalities and comfort level of your FH, FMIL, and dad's ability to have a little fun on the dance floor for 2 minutes :-)

I, too, have a verrrrrrrry tense relationship with my father. I decided to go with something fun and that is associated with the one thing we do have in common/don't fight about: our love for the NY Yankees. So, we're dancing to "New York, New York." My fam are almost all NYers, so I'm hoping everyone will get into it and start singing to keep the mood light!

I'm in the process of trying to convince my fiancé that, if we have to do these dances (I'm with you - don't want to deal with daddy issues with this thing), I want "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns 'n' Roses. Hey, it would be a good way to kick off the dancing... Smiley smile

I'm a big fan of just the way you look tonight, if you're looking for upbeat, or Wonderful World for a slower paced song.
