Non-religious ceremony

Jordan, on October 8, 2019 at 9:58 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 13
My Fiancé and I are having a non religious ceremony and we are writing our own vows, but I do not want the ceremony too short. Any suggestions? I love the candle ceremony and how that incorporates our family, but our ceremony is outside and it tends to be windy, so that I feel is out of the question. Not too sure what else we can add to make it a little longer.

Have you considered a sand ceremony instead of candles? We thought of doing candles, but ran into the same issue. I’m not a huge fan of the sand ceremony personally, so we’ve decided to do a glass ceremony! We’ll both have a different color of sand, then we’ll pour it in one container. After the wedding, we ship it back to the company and they make a hand blown glass sculpture with it!

We had a none relegious ceremony and wrote our own vows as well. We also added two readings (none relegious) that really spoke to us.

There is the welcoming by the officiant, which typically takes a few minutes. You can read traditional vows and read your own as well. We will probably do this. Then there is the ring blessing and exchange, which takes a few minutes. Then you can do a unity thing (we will be hand fasting). Then there is the "do you take each other?", then the declaration.

What about a hand tying ceremony? We are completely not traditional so we're "tying the knot" literally! Each strand will represent an element to our relationship. One him, one me and one us... We're doing things with a very non-traditional flare... for example: My Father is passed away, so I'm walking the aisle alone. We've also decided to stand up without our party standing beside us. This, to us, symbolizes our strength to walk alone but choose one another on this earth. :-)

We did the sharing of the cup ceremony. We both drank from a single glass of wine. I liked it because our officiant said something things like "and like you share this cup, you are also sharing the future" but also "keep this cup in a place in the home that is easy to see. And if you find yourselves in a struggle, may the stronger person fill the glass, so you may share from the cup again and be reminded of your vows". I like having something else that we can look at and remember our wedding day. We also decided to take a ceramics class and make our cup ourselves. I also liked the idea of the sand ceremony others mentioned.
