"Non refundable" Deposit, anyone have any insight?

Amanda, on December 19, 2019 at 11:17 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8

We unfortunately were made aware yesterday that my future FIL was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer. We don't know what the next 9 months holds for our family. We are trying to wrap our heads around how to get our deposits back if we were to cancel. Wedding date is September 5, 2020. We have reached out to the Venue and are awaiting a response. Has anyone had luck getting deposits back with these kind of circumstances?

We are hoping they will understand that this is a very hard time for us and we need to focus on him and not wedding planning. This is also FIL's second fight with cancer. Any and all insight is greaty appreciated!

I'm so sorry that your family is going through this. Unfortunately, you're at the mercy of your venue. They may refund your deposit out of kindness, but they're not legally obligated to.

I'm so sorry your family is going through this difficult time; sending you all prayers! Have you considered moving your wedding date up? Some venues will allow you to change the date so that you don't lose your deposit/they don't have to refund you.

Moving the date up is not an option as he starts Chemo and Radiation Monday of next week the 23rd. Smiley sad We want him to be able to enjoy our day and be as much of a part of it as the rest of the family. We are not totally sure how long he will be undergoing the chemo and radiation either.

I am so sorry your family is going through this. I hope he has a quick recovery. We had to postpone and the venue just held our deposit. I hope your venue does the same!

My best friend had a similar situation 2 years ago. Her venue agreed to apply all money they had paid to another date. Is that something that could work? Good luck.

This is about what I was going to suggest as well. My venue actually stated that we could change our date a single time without paying a fee, and we could even change it as many times as we wanted with a fee every time, of course.
If they are not willing to refund your deposit, I would ask if they would be willing to allow you to switch your date either free of charge or for a small fee.

Hello everyone! Just an update- we couldn’t pick a new date in 2020 because of surgeries and the uncertainties of how long this may last. The venue did agree to refund all of our deposits after a few email exchanges. The DJ has also agreed to do the same if our date books. The photographers have been unresponsive to our last messages. Thank you again for all your kind words! Hope you have a wonderful New Year!
