Non-Professional review of AdoramaPix Hudson Photo Album

tjacob2014, on June 30, 2017 at 2:37 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

Hello WW,

Just wanted to post a quick review of the Hudson Album I ordered through AdoramaPix from the viewpoint of a non-professional. I was looking for reviews before I ordered and couldn't find a ton, so I decided I'd do one in case anyone needed one. There have been a lot of questions about albums this week too, so maybe it will be helpful.

We maxed out our budget on a photographer, but his albums were way out of our price range. Going for the most expensive option at AdoramaPix, I think we spent under half of what the price would have been (although I'm sure his album would have been stunning and worth the money).

I'm vegan, and AdoramaPix has an option for a faux leather, which is part of the reason I decided to go with them. The cover looks and feels awesome in person, and doesn't look cheap or synthetic. I ended up going with a 12 x 15 book (which is HUGE in retrospect), 100 contemporary slim pages. We opted for the Lustre paper, Navy cover, silver edging

OMG thank you thank you thank you.

    Please post about it....

How thick are the thin pages, can you post more pics of the colour of the cover? Cacn you post pics of your pages? How did you find the colouring and quality?

Did you do 2 page spreads that stretched out on all pages? If so what was your resolution of images?

How was shipping, customer service etc?

    Anything you'd change???

And silver stamping on the cover. The pages are flexible but study, which is what I expected with the Contemporary Slim pages. That option allows you to increase your page count. If you stick with the traditional pages, they aren't flexible at all. As a non-professional, the colors seem to match what I was expecting and are pretty vibrant. Shipping was QUICK, we get the album less than a week after ordering, but it is coming from the same city. If you keep your page count down, the album can be pretty affordable. The layflat pages are truly seamless, which is also fantastic. Attached a few more photos to show the coloring and layflat pages. I did not opt for color correction.

If you have any questions about it, let me know Smiley smile

LOL VC you beat me to my continuation. Hopefully that answers some of the questions. One thing I'd change is that I thought I picked rounded corners, which they can do for a very small fee, but turns out I forgot to click it. The corners are kind of sharp so I just have to be careful.

I did many spreads over the two pages, probably why I ended up with so many pages other than pure difficulty deciding between favorites. I know some of the other professional photogs here recommend many less pages. The book is the biggest size and it is a behemoth, but I'm happy with it. This album is staying in our living room on the second tier of our coffee table for perusing when we want or when guests come over, so it wasn't meant to be toted around. It's VERY heavy so I recommend a much smaller size and less pages for that. The Slim pages are almost the thickness of the penny, but the classic pages are even thicker.

Shipping and customer service were fantastic. The only hiccup was that for the stamping of the cover, one of their letters of the one font is broken and it's ordered and on the way to them. They called me and asked if I would rather wait or they could use the other font and ship it right away, so I did that since we have company next week I'd like to have it for.

I picked the Navy faux leather option with Silver print. @ VC Here's a pic of it next to our black remote so you can get an idea for color. As you can probably tell from the rug, our living room accent colors are navy and silver so it looks gorgeous displayed in our living room.

Oh, also totally have no idea what resolution my photos are. They are downloaded from the online gallery my photographer made for us, so I'm not sure what it is. It has to be pretty high because I've already had one of the artistic photos printed on a huge canvas and it looks great. Maybe some of the professionals can jump in and recommend a certain resolution or give you more info for this type of project.

Thank you! I love it. My husband is considering the exact Navy Blue and I was thinking grey instead so your cover makes me reconsider.

Oh to find out the resolution you just right click the image on your computer and see properties.

12x15 seems massive so we are lookig around for size and weight etc. lol.

We also plan on doing rounded edges so I hope I dont forget. We are debating edging too since husband thinks it's pricey. I have to convince him though haha.

Er, I have a Mac so I dont think that's an option. One photo is 2.3 MB, idk if that's meaningful at all.

Yes, the 12 x 15 is definitely massive lol I think we would have been just as happy with a smaller size.

I would definitely do the edging if you can talk him into it, because it has a polished finish with it IMHO. I'm not sure what it would look like otherwise, though.

I love the navy! I highly recommend it.

Haha I am on MAC as well. It's ok. I assume it's similar to mine. I just wanted to make sure that when I create spreads across 2 pages that the image quality doesn't decrease noticeably.

Did you enjoy using the software, cropping and moving the images around?

Did you use their layouts or just made it all on your own?

Yeah I have no see properties, just "Get Info" and that doesn't say anything. If you open the image in Preview, it will give you DPI, but since that changes with size of the image I don't think that is a meaningful value at all, I'm not sure.

Their software was easy to use. I didn't use a themed layout or anything, but I did use layouts from the "layout" tab with simple white backgrounds and went from there. Sometimes I changed the sizes of the boxes, and it was all very intuitive and easy.

    Actually that is useful.

Are you able to check say the largest image you blew up on a two page spread, what does the DPI show?

I think so far the lowest number I have is 200. The lower the number, the quality may be lower but if it's not visible to you then that's good.

The max Adoramapix gives you is 300.

Okay so I just remembered I did save the spreads as PDFs from AdoramaPix, each one is 300 DPI. I was thinking my individual photos wouldn't be useful because they aren't in the size/form I used them in the album, but I forgot I had those!

Great review!! Thank you!! I have been debating between the Hudson Album by AP or Artifact Uprising and Milk Books, and Zno premium flush mount albums. They are all pretty top of the line for non-pros but I love the guilded pages and rounded corners options you mention here.
