Non Amplified Music Ideas/Help?

Ashli, on October 26, 2017 at 3:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Our venue, an early-1800s church, happens to be smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood, thus comes with a non-amplified music only policy. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to go about the planning the music for the reception? I know nothing about music and would really like to still have something our guests can actually dance to. The wedding will be in New Orleans so I am totally fine with a funky band but still don't know if all bands (unless they are a string quartet) have some sort of amplification? Should I ask the event coordinator if there is a certain decibel that cannot be exceeded, or would it be totally unacceptable to find out if there is a fine associated with the violation and determine if just paying the fine would be worth having amplified music (I read someone else post that and thought it was a little odd...but figured I would throw it out there to see what everyone else thought).

Help!

I would ask the coordinator for suggestions but I'm sure if you spoke with the funky bands, they'd be able to accommodate you as needed. That sounds like a gorgeous venue!

The coordinator should definitely be able to provide suggestions, given that they've held weddings there before. I hope you come back to post a BAM, I'd love to see the church!

Thank you both! I am in love with the space, so I knew going in the music would be something I could totally work with or around. I'm attaching a pic, which is not mine-but it is the pic I found years before I was engaged and what led me to fall in love with it.

I'll ask the coordinator if he has any suggestions...He did provide me with a list of vendors that have worked well with the venue as a recommendation, but the 3 recommended musicians were either jazz bands or classical. Womp womppp. I don't mind jazz as long as it is not elevator jazz and is something funky! That's the best word I can use to describe it...lol if you know New Orleans you know exactly what I am talking about. Smiley smile

Ahh I am so slow at responding--thanks everyone*! I will definitely come back with a BAM. I've got 6 months to go...but it is FLYING BY so I know it will be here before I know it.

@Kate: THANK YOU! I cannot begin to express how excited I am. It is truly a blank slate so everything has to be brought in by the WP, but that was also why I loved it. It doesn't need a lot of décor because it is breathtaking in all of its chipped paint and mismatched floor glory. That will actually be the reception space as well--we plan on (having our vendor team) flipping the space during cocktail hour. Let me see if I can find another inspo pic for the reception...

Ask your coordinator recs as PPs have suggested, but don't count out those jazz groups yet! If you reach out and specify what kind of music you're looking for (helps if you have example songs, give them a feel for what kind of sound you want) and mention the no amplification restriction, I'm sure they could work with you.

Also, that venue is to die for! Looking forward to your BAM!

Thank you, @Criz and @Kathryn! I will for sure reach back out to the coordinator. He name is Bill Murray, which also made me think this place was totally perfect.

@Wendy C: Thanks so much for the kind words and advice! There is a noise ordinance in addition to the non-amplified music policy; all music must be off by 9:30pm. (Not to worry, we are planning a shin-dig for after as well so those who want to stay out and continue the celebration, can do so!) That is a good point though regarding the indoor vs outdoor music. Bill never specified one way or the other, I just assumed it was across the board. Although, when I say it is smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood, that is NO exaggeration. The neighbors immediately to the left/right/across the street are 2-3 bedroom bungalows where people actually reside full time. That's not to say it isn't worth asking!

Hahaha love Kate. I was about to say that a full brass band would be way louder than most amplified music, but if you have anoise level too (which makes sense) then the 20 piece brass band wouldn't work well. I always wanted 76 trombones for my wedding.

I need to also do more research on bands. As long as we can dance to it, I'm totally cool with it! I'm sure with enough booze and good food, our guests will be open to embracing it. After all, when in Rome!

@Maria, if you've never been you should ABSOLUTELY go. I grew up going to the festivals, parades, eating the food and embracing the culture; it really is unlike any other place. Almost like its own world!
