No wedding website?

Is it necessary to have a website if you have mail-in RSVP cards? Is it safe to say that it's a relatively new phenomenon? Have any of you chosen not to create one? I never questioned it until a family member said not to bother because it would just add another thing to do.

I made one for like 2.5 seconds and then I realized that there was nothing on the website that couldn't be found on the invite so I scrapped it

    I didn't have one, I also had mail-in RSVP's. Nobody missed it.

It was invaluable. We've been invited to 15 weddings, over the last 4 years, and everyone has had one. We did our RSVPs, through our website, and we heard from all but 2 guests, 10 days before the website. We saved lots on RSVP cards, postage, inserts for the invitations and time spent explaining the room block and such, to our guests. Plus it was totally free. It only took about an hour to set-up, once I got all the information together.

I didn't create one because I didn't want people who were not invited to my wedding to know all the details. It is very easy to find a couple online- all you need is the groom's or bride's name. I consider myself a private person. We didn't take engagement pictures either.

Our wedding web site doesn't have a whole lot on it - but I may encourage people to rsvp on it anyway (we have postcard reply cards) just to make it clearer whose meal choices are whose (not sure what I'll get back on the postcards since I didn't give specific initialing instructions :-/).

I don't think it's necessary but they're free and take like 10 minutes. It's like hotel blocks. You don't HAVE to, but why not make things a tad bit easier for your guests when you can with very little effort?
