Just Said Yes May 2021

No response from photographer

Last week my fiancé and I booked our wedding photographer. We signed the contract last Thursday (3/12) and mailed her our deposit on (3/13). My fiancé found out on Monday that his employer is requiring that he travels out of state for the next 2 years. We knew he would eventually travel for work but we assumed it would be after the wedding. We discussed our options and decided on canceling the wedding and waiting until we know for sure when he’ll be home. I immediately emailed our venue and photographer (those are the only two things we’ve booked so far). I let them know that we need to cancel our wedding for May of 2021. Our venue was very understandable and even offered to refund the deposit. I have not heard anything from our photographer. It’s been over 24 hours since I emailed her about wanting to cancel. She’s usually pretty quick to email me back. I understand times are crazy right now and she may be dealing with other couples trying to re-schedule. I just want to confirm that she got our email so she doesn’t cash the check. Our contract clearly states that as long as she did not turn down another wedding for the same date (May 2021) all money paid to her was refundable. I’m almost positive she has not turned down another couple for the same day. She even told me she was still trying to book weddings for the end of this year and only had 2 weddings booked for next January. I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to be rude and void the check but I also don’t want her to cash it and keep the $1,500. Any advice??

Like you said, it's a crazy busy time for vendors right now and she might be fielding calls and messages from brides that were coming up soon. I would give her a week to respond, given everything that's going on. As lame as that is (trust me, I know), she probably has had to prioritize her list of responses, and for a 2021 bride, she might be holding off until she gets her 2020s sorted out. Again, lame. But I wouldn't have too much fear about it.

I would void the check too. Just be sure to tell her you’ve done so. Sure it’s awkward, but you need to look out for yourself first.

I'd void the check, given what your contract says.
