No registry

Andrea, on December 11, 2023 at 9:01 PM Posted in Registry 0 2
My fiancé and I are both middle aged and combined two VERY full houses when he moved in. So we decided we weren’t going to do a gift registry. We put that on our wedding website and included some of our favorite charities for donations in lieu of gifts for those who still wanted to give something.

But we still have people asking us repeatedly what we want for a gift. We explain our circumstances but they insist “Oh but we have to give you something!” I love that our friends are so generous, but we really don’t want more STUFF. Any suggestions on what we can say to persuade our loving friends that we really don’t want anything?

I would just direct them to the charities, and assure them that their donation would be appreciated above any physical gift.
P.S. I LOVE that you’re doing this! I wish we had thought of that!

I don't think it's proper to direct gift giving when it comes to gifts, even for charity and even if asked. A wedding isn't a fundraiser. A physical registry has the distinction of being arm's length. The spin is that it's a list of things the couple is collecting for themselves that guests have to search out in some way in order to find, for example on a store website, a plain link on a wedding website, or by word of mouth. In your situation, I would just continue to say that you are being honest when you say you are in need of nothing for the home. Either they will take you at face value, send a monetary gift or contribute to a charity of their own choice on their own time as they see fit.
