I recently received my engagement photos back and out of 185 shots, I only like about 15 of them. Let me just say, this had nothing to do with the photographer. I recently received my engagement photos back and out of 185 shots, I only like about 15 of them. Let me just say, this had nothing to do with the photographer. He is ranked number 1 on thumbtack in my city and the top 10 in general in my local area. I disliked the majority of the photos bc I simply don't like the way I look. I'm insexure about my dark skin and my big forehead. Both things that got me teased a lot throughout my childhood. At this point, I'm not sure if I want to pay for professional pictures on our actual wedding day when I'll only like less than 10 percent of the photos. Have any of you done or known others to not have professional photography on their wedding day and instead have a family member or friend do them? If so, what was the result?

The way I look at it, most people only end up displaying/sharing a handle of the best photos, so the best 10% is really what you are paying for.
I don’t turn out well in many photos (I like the way I look but my small eyes are always squinting in pictures!) and I’ve discussed with my photographer and she knows to take a lot of shots to hope I’m not blinking in some of them!

There are definitely more than a handful of our photos that I hid from our gallery before sharing with everyone. There’s one where I’m laughing with an awful double chin and a witch nose - bleh. Others where my arms look chunky that made me self conscious enough to go on a post wedding diet. Some my husband looks kind dorky in. However, we do love many others that were surprisingly flattering. I don’t have the answer for you but hopefully the advice and experiences of others helps decide.

I think what you should do is keep the professional and highlight with him/her, what your insecurities are, and ask him to photograph in a way that hides them. For example, when it comes to your skin tone, you could ask him to edit and retouch the photos in a more muted fashion as opposed to a bright contrast. I mean you could also ask him to purposely make your skin tone lighter, even though I'm highly against changing your natural beauty. In regards to your negative feelings about your forehead, you could ask your hair stylist to mask them with some bangs and so on.

I'm aware that for you, photos aren't exactly all that big on your wedding list. Ultimately, it's your choice what you want to do with them. I mean if the only thing you want to remember your wedding day is a few photos taken on someone's cellphone, than by all means go for it. However, I will say this, at the end of the day, and as years pass by, eventually all you'll have left are photographs.

No, he's not okay with it. I told him if he wants it then he and his parebts were welcome to pay for it.

Okay, I wish I would have known the 10 percent rule before hand. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

Okay, thank you for your input. I definitely want pics, my hangup was paying for professional versus amateur.
