No inner envelope?

AutumnBride, on July 29, 2015 at 1:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

I received our wedding invitations yesterday (Yay! Go vistaprint!) and am beginning to assemble them. I am realizing that I never ordered inner envelopes- I never even planned on using them- I am writing the names of the people invited on the outer envelope...

Is this frowned upon? I just don't see the point in them, am I missing something? Is anyone else going without inner envelopes?

I went without. They're a waste of paper IMO. If someone were doing a traditional, black-tie wedding, they should probably use them. I feel like other people can just go without and people won't notice.

But - some people do prefer them if they're only inviting adults and not children and want to make that more clear.

I chose not too. We are doing an online RSVP tho which is why we did that. We included an invitation, and RSVP card with the site address and how many seats reserved and a reception card detailing where the reception was. Invites went out today and I'm thinking it should go some what smoothly!

Just make sure to be clear on labeling the outside names with only the people who are invited and the RSVP card will need to have seats reserved or who is attending. Are you doing online RSVP's?

I went with them and wished I hadn't. We tested and the stamp went from being $0.49 to $0.71. I could have saved myself some money and time since I had about 160 invitations. I think they are pointless. Just write the names on the outer envelopes. And then when people send in the RSVP you can deal with them adding people/ children. Annoying yes but probably would still happen with names on the inside envelope.

Thank you Rebecca and Goose.... No, we are doing paper RSVPs. I hope the names on the outer envelope will be clear enough to everyone (mostly everyone knows its adults only) I might have some RSVP problems if not Smiley sad

We didn't use them. I can see how perhaps they may be beneficial to better clarifying who is or isn't invited, but that situation didn't apply to us and they just seemed like a waste of time and money. Gotta save money somewhere and that was an easy place to do it.

Melissa- Wow, that's a big spike in price when you're talking invites, we are inviting 195 so that would make a big difference, thanks! That's what I'm thinking... I might have some responses I need to deal with

It is not nesissary unless you are having a black tie event or a very formal wedding

We skipped the inner envelope and no one said anything. I really do't think that most people even care anymore unless it is a black tie wedding I don't think having the two envelopes is that big of a deal.

If it helps - we had 5 x 7 flat invites and 3 x 5 reply postcards (no envelope) and 3 x 5 reception cards and those fit within the .49 cent weight limit. We could have skipped the reception cards, too.

We also skipped them and I'm glad I did. Stuffing them was enough work without an extra piece!

No inner envelope here, and no one noticed.

We didn't use one. I have never actually seen an invitation with an inner envelope.

I unintentionally skipped the inner envelope. I didn't even know they were a thing until my mom asked where they were.

Seems like such a waste. I literally just had to google what an inner envelope for a wedding invite was. haha

They are not necessary. They are more of a formality. It also adds extra weight for mailing.

I did them and honestly, think it was the main reason I had zero (yes zero) RSVP issues. No added guests, no confusion, no questions as to who was invited. It was 100% worth it. I would recommend it.

ETA: FWIW - my wedding was relatively formal so it helped with that too.

Thanks guys! Yeah it seems like a waste to me, too. I'm not doing to spend the extra $, we really can't afford to, especially for something that isn't often done, or is done for extremely formal weddings. Our wedding is formal, but not black tie formal lol

@Emmy- thank you for that! You are lucky!

I used the belly band in lieu of an inner envelope.

I don't have a photo of my invitation with me but sort of like this: http://www.oliveweddings.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Smoke-pocket-with-yellow-belly-band.jpg

I feel so much better after reading this thread! I just heard from our invitation designer that ours did not come with inner envelopes and was panicking but after reading everyone's comments I think we should be okay.

We designed our RSVP's so that they list the guests individually as well as having _______ of _______ will be attending on the RSVP. We intend on filling in the total number of seats reserved for each invitation so I am very hopeful that we will not have any issues with who is or is not invited.
