No Food Tasting?

I booked my venue a few months ago, and it is coming time to finalize our menu. I booked my venue a few months ago, and it is coming time to finalize our menu. I contacted our coordinator and expressed interest in visiting the venue to pay our next deposit, take a look around to plan tables, etc. and taste some food so we can set the menu. She said they do not offer tastings (not even if we pay for it) but maybe she would be able to ask the chef to make us a plate (of one meal).

Is it typical for a venue to not allow us to try the food? How in the world are we supposed to know what to feed 120 people if we have no idea how it tastes? I'm also getting nervous because they don't seem to offer any options for vegans, which I have a few of in my family. What can I do about this?

I would never pick out food for my wedding menu that I hadn't personally tasted. Our catering cost was almost half of our overall budget so I wouldn't feel comfortable spending that much money on something I couldn't try first. Plus, I LOVE food, so it was one of the most important parts of the wedding for me! At this point, you may only be able to rely on reviews as PPs have said (literally read every review you can find to try to find out more info about their menu). This definitely should have been something that was discussed before the contract was signed but what's done is done. I would also specifically ask them about their menu options for people with dietary restrictions (they should be able to provide you with something).

ETA: I would also check your contract. If it's not explicitly stated that they don't do food tastings I would consider it negotiable, especially since it was never discussed with you beforehand. If it is in your contract (that food tastings are not provided) than you're out of luck, unfortunately.

I've heard of venues that do this. I would never book with someone who wouldn't allow you to try their food first. Sketchy IMHO.
