No Dj?

Kellie, on April 23, 2020 at 2:43 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14
Is anyone NOT hiring a DJ?

My wedding is very small, guest list is 80 that will be invited. The venue has sound system hookups and even a microphone. They said some people just make a playlist and have it go through the evening. We are not doing a first dance, no introductions, etc. the only things that would need announced would be cocktail hour, dinner time, cake cutting, and that’s it.
Does this sound doable? Or do you think it would be a huge mistake?

I think it is doable, just make sure you have someone to do the announcements.

You definitely need to have a dedicated person in charge of music and announcements, but it doesn't necessarily need to be a professional DJ. Don't make the mistake of making your entire playlist and assuming people will just know when to start/stop music, make announcements, change the song to fit the mood, or troubleshoot if something goes wrong, otherwise it could be a big distraction from actually enjoying your celebration.

We had only 45 people but the dj was worth every penny. He made all the difference in creating the atmosphere we were looking for and choosing a good mix of songs I wouldn’t have been able to put together. People had a blast and I know I wouldn’t have been able to pull that off on my own.

All depending on the covid19 craziness, but if we have to cut our wedding guests down to 10 people in order to still get married on our planned date than we will be doing our own music, setting everything up night before (making playlists way in advanced tho)

I should note tho that we are very proficient in music, FH is a pro music producer, so we are confident in it going smooth and already have the equipment

It is doable, but my future in-laws did this and made the mistake of telling their buzzed guests where the iPad was. It resulted in people randomly changing the music in the middle of a song, and a lot of repeated/disliked songs (couldn't dance to some, others were sad/break-up songs). I would suggest securing the device you are using somewhere to avoid this. Also, for sure ask someone to make announcements before the day of. My partner was the best man and he was asked to do the announcements in the middle of cocktail hour (when the venue asked the bride and groom who would ask people to sit for dinner). He didn't mind doing it, but would have preferred to know in advance so he could have prepared based on a timeline.

I totally agree. We only had about 50 people but our DJ was amazing and had people on the dance floor all night. People said it was one of the best weddings they’ve ever been to. Worth it!

It’s totally doable. It’s what I’m doing. Although we’re doing set dances and introductions, particular songs for cake cutting, bouquet toss, etc. so I’m asking a friend to act as MC for the day.

If you’re not having dancing or a party vibe, a playlist should be fine. We had a musician for cocktail hour, and a playlist for dinner/dessert (no dancing). 15 guests.

We are having a small wedding, about 35-45 guests, and found a dj who will play acoustic guitar during the ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner and then dj later in the night! It sounded perfect for the type of vibe we are going for and I feel like it will be worth every penny.
