FH said the other day that he doesn’t think we should get a DJ because there will be so few people there, but I can’t imagine a wedding without one. Who will play the music? We definitely need music and want to dance. Who will announce us and the BP? Or is the wedding too small for “announcing”? Has anyone been to a wedding without a DJ? Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

We aren't getting a DJ, we have musicians for the beach ceremony, and we will play music off a ipod at the reception!

We are not having a DJ nor dance (although people are welcome to dance if they want). We are professional musicians and will be doing some music ourselves and have many friends and family that are musicians and will be performing also. The MOH and BM will be doing the DJ honors of announcing stuff. Ours is also a small wedding. The music will be everything from classical to rock!

I've been to a DW without dj and a friend a friend announced. No problem. They hooked their iPod to the venues PA system.

We originally were going to have no DJ and use an iPod and have a friend do announcements etc. But my event planner pointed out how distracting it would be to have a guest constantly getting up form their table and how unenjoyable it would be for them to MC your wedding while being a guest. So we opted for a live band.. same price and I felt our money goes a lot further.

Were not having a DJ. Our venue does have a sound system so we'll use that for special dances and background. If people want to dance they can but I don't expect it so much. Our reception will only be about 3 to 4 hours if that. Idk what I'm going to do for announcements yet though if I even do them.

I have been to a wedding without a DJ. It was a small backyard wedding with 20 people. They had an iPod hooked up. I thought it worked nicely for the type of event they wanted.

I am having a DJ (and 102 guests), but not doing bp announcements. I don't think having those announcements really factors into it feeling like a wedding. We wanted a DJ for the atmosphere we are going for. With the size you are having, I think an iPod would work. Just figure out how you are going to do ceremony music.

I think you should get a DJ if you can afford it because it sounds like you want one. You will probably regret it if you don't.

Thanks everyone. I just have never been to a wedding without a dj, and don't know what to expect. But I've also never been to a wedding as small as the one I'm planning so I'm not sure a dj is necessary.

I'm glad to hear the different points of view!

We been going back and fourth on this as well. Even if we did a laptop and speaker setup I would have to get someone to man it all night .

I hired a folk singer for my cocktail hour and then paid her extra to MC and manage my DIY Spotify playlists. For Spotify if you pay the $10 a month fee you can make playlists and play them offline. It beats buying each song if you don't already own them. I used my laptop. But my church hall already had a sound system and I hired the Church's guy who knew the sound system as well. If you go the DIY route make sure you still hire someone to manage it and who knows your sound system.

We are doing IPod as well. Instead of buying them because I have everything on CD, I used an online program to convert YouTube videos to mp3. The only downside was finding good quality videos for everything took a bit of time. As well as using an editor for a few songs that where way too long. In all it cost me nothing money wise but if was a good month of doing all that and then getting the playlists in a cohesive order.

I've never been a fan of pushy djs, synchronized dances, or played out wedding music so we're not doing a DJ. Plus we're only having 30ish guests. The FH is in charge of compiling the playlist and I'll be giving him a list of "must hears", the rest is up to him. Since we don't have a wedding party, and the venue is going straight from ceremony to reception there's no need for intros either.

The majority of our guests are our age and drinkers, so I'm sure there will be asses on the dance floor Smiley smile

Edit: I almost forgot. We're sending out these cute cassette tape cards with the invites asking for requests with their rsvps. This way guests will hear a song they want, we'll have a good mix and no one needs to get up to change songs or moods or whatever. The Fh is taking this job seriously lol

I have like 24 ppl coming to my destination wedding and we are not having a dj. I have designated someone to play their iPod but there will be a mic so we will be introduced by the person I designated. Trust me you will find a way to make it work if not then find a way to add the dj to your budget and cut back on other things!
