No dj = No mc

K, on January 6, 2019 at 8:48 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18
Hey everyone! I am in the beginning phases of planning my November wedding. Our wedding is going to be small around 80 guests and only 4 people are in our bridal party besides us. For this reason (and to save money) we have decided not to hire a DJ. We both feel comfortable creating massive playlists on Spotify and have family members who are musical to recruit for help. However we are concerned about how to reception will flow because no DJ = no MC. We are hiring a day of coordinator who will help keep us to our timeline throughout the evening but I don’t think this is anything like MCing. Wondering if anyone out there has experience with not using a DJ and how they navigated the flow of their reception. Did you do announcements/ introductions? How did you cue people to move from each aspect of evening? If you don’t have experience, do you have any ideas for natural transitions to move from the different events of the evening? (First dance, buffet dinner, toasts, shoe game, cake cutting, etc) THANKS A MILLION!

If you’re nervous about, you might look into a hiring a dj. If you check local Facebook Groups, Instagram, GigSalad, GigMasters, Thumbtack, you will be able to find a reputable DJ at a good price. With that many people, I think a DJ is in order. Unless if your family members are pros, don’t leave this highly important task for them. You’ll find someone!

I've been to a few weddings and have never actually seen a DJ. They all just asked an outgoing friend to MC for the night and it worked out great! We're planning on doing the same thing since we can't afford a DJ.

Can you or your fiancé announce a few things. Or if possible hire a DJ or mc for just two hours to get the announcement done. If not i understand tight budget.

Really would like to avoid having to hire DJ. We are prepared to make announcements and such for events if necessary but we are hoping to create some natural transitions or cues in the evening. Maybe use the wedding party?

I’ve been to a wedding where they used their laptop with a playlist and chose a groomsmen to make announcements on a mic. They really didn’t get the party they were hoping for bc the atmosphere wasn’t there. But if you want a more relaxed evening it can work well and definitely save money.

Totally understand the need to make financial choices, but realize a good DJ has a lot to do with reading the crowd and getting/keeping people engaged. I've been to a playlist wedding; it was lovely, but very low-key and relatively low energy. People mostly sat around and talked/visited. Beforehand, the bride kept saying how it was going to be a "rocking party" based on her playlist. Like I said, it was a lovely reception, but there was virtually no dancing (besides some super awkward B&G and parent dances -- full-length songs...; it's pretty deadly to watch four individual couples dance awkwardly for a total of 12-15 minutes... [a good DJ will edit your spotlight songs to 60-90 seconds to keep things from dragging awkwardly]), and it was definitely NOT a rocking party. It was more like a more formal family reunion -- not bad, but not a party atmosphere. Depending on what you want, that can be GREAT and economical, but make sure you realize it will likely be pretty low-key.

Thanks for your thoughts! One of the reasons that we don't want a DJ is also because we are not trying to create a "rocking party" kind of atmosphere. We plan to do traditional dances (with shortened songs), but then kind of hope that the evening will take on more of games and hang out and visiting atmosphere, very family reunion like. Our wedding is small and guests will mostly be out of town close friends and family of various generations so we feel like this type of atmosphere is more appropriate.

I love the idea of spotify, we are a small (50 person) wedding, and we are going to do a small harmon kardon Bluetooth speaker and a playlist. I am going to have to check it out. I was trying with pandora.

Can you make a custom playlist?

This is the virtual tour of the historic venue. We are in the second floor ballroom!

With your day of coordinator, create a timeline for the day and have them handle the transitions! You can also have a nice sign(s) with the times for things! Best wishes!

We asked FH's very charismatic cousin to MC. We're not hiring a DJ either.

Beautiful venue! Spotify is super easy to use my FH and I both use it all the time. Its better in my opinion than Pandora because you can make actual playlists rather than "radio stations" that randomly pick songs for you. You can make as many playlists as you want with no commercials with Spotify Premium. Haven't finished researching but there seems to be a lot of apps that work with Spotify for events like weddings to allow for playlist shuffle and even guest song request if you want.

Thanks for your thoughts and ideas! Having a timeline with my DOC and then posting some signage is a great idea!

Also, having your bridal party help is a great idea---- Have your BM and MOH and others announce the transitions are good options too!
