No contract with vendor?

Jeanie, on August 7, 2023 at 10:29 AM Posted in Planning 0 5
Hey folks,

I was a little obsessive about maximizing my vendor choice — I did phone interviews and received proposals from 10 different florists! They’re responsible for creating the ambience of the whole reception, essentially, so I wanted to be sure I had the best one at the price we could afford.
I selected a florist and she told me the next step would be to pay her a deposit. After that she would send me a mood board and more detailed proposal with specific flowers, etc.
Nowhere does she mention a contract. I emailed her back saying I was excited to send a deposit but wanted to know if there’s a contract for us to sign. No response yet.
What would you do here? This is weird, right? A contract protects both of us.
She’s been in business 7 years and has a profile with 2 five star reviews here on weddding wire.
Our wedding is 17 August 2024, if that makes a difference.

I would 100% ask for a contract before sending any money. Make sure it details information about cancellation/postponement policies, payment due dates, payment methods accepted, deposit amount, delivery info, detailed cost info, etc. The positive reviews are great, but those don't protect you in case anything goes wrong.

Lisa said it perfectly! Definitely request a detailed contract that protects both parties before handing over any money.

No contract is a huge red flag. Without one, there is nothing in writing legally protecting you if anything goes wrong where the vendor doesn’t do their job as agreed. They can do whatever they want and you have no leg to stand on if anything goes wrong and you have nothing to back you up if there is any dispute. If they refuse to give you a contract, move on to the next vendor.

Yeah I wouldn’t send her any money until she sends you a contract

Ok, good news. The florist agreed to send me a contract and I’ve read it over and it looks fine! Thanks for confirming my suspicions ladies.
