No Buy / Low Buy Year!

Jessica, on February 6, 2020 at 9:24 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7
Since the large expenses of my wedding and honeymoon my new years resolution was to build up my savings with a "low buy" year. Basically I try to only purchase needs instead of wants. Instead of mindless spending or impulse buys I ask myself with every purchase "Do I need this? Do I already have something else like this I could use instead?" I also won't buy anything new I need until I run out of what I already have. There are a lot of YouTube videos with strategies of how to spend less! Anyone else doing to save for wedding expenses?

I actually do this as a challenge for myself in general. I started with clothing. I made a pact to myself to not buy anything clothing wise unless legit needed e.g. all my socks are ripped or something aha. I haven't bought a new item of clothing in years other than my matron of honor dress I have to wear to my bff wedding.
And then I slow cut out things i was spending too much on e.g how people go to Starbucks a lot. That was me aha.

I like to write it all down in my journal. I know banks usually cover this in apps, but I feel like thats more of a tool for double checking any transactions you might of forgot. Swear jars may seem childish, but they work. Also look into some savings gurus, my old roommate from college is becoming one herself and often says so and so changed her life. (I dont remember names, just that Oprah reccomends them) Lastly, idk your relationship with your bank, but mine is always so excited to show you tips and tricks that will help you not only now, but long term.

Journaling Wil really hold you accountable! Especially tracking cash purchases that aren't reflected on bank accounts!

My life is a make do and mend minimalist approach. I've never not needed to budget, but I am finding that my saving has stalled the last few months.

There is a 52 week challenge you could do. You start with saving £1 the first week, adding 1 more each week. By the end of the year you should have £1378.

In terms of simply consuming less, you can keep your meals simple with just a few ingredients. Use your bath water to flush your loo. Get a mooncup to save money on feminine products. Turn your heat down by 1 degree. Sew holes or patch instead of replacing. Buy from thrift stores. Add a bit of water to liquid soap, dish soap, liquid detergent etc. When you need new bulbs, buy eco ones. They are more expensive initially, but they last far longer. Look on Pinterest for other uses for old items. Have a swap shop with friends and family for new clothes, games, books etc.

Not all of those will be feasible or applicable, but hopefully there are some of use to you. Smiley smile
