Night Wedding Schedule Review

K2020, on October 25, 2019 at 2:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I am getting married on September 12, 2020. I have always envisioned a night wedding so I prefer to get married near sunset. As such, I have made the following schedule below. I pushed up the ceremony time so that dinner could be served at a "more reasonable" time since much later than 8pm is apparently not a good idea. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do you think the reception is long enough?

Bare in mind, we will not be doing the traditional cake-in-the-face, speeches, or throwing of the garter. This is also a no children ceremony and reception.

6:30-7pm Ceremony

7-8pm Cocktail hour (alcohol, other beverages, very light appetizers such as fruit and cheese trays. Meanwhile bride and groom get pictures with family)

8-11pm Reception (dinner, desert, dancing)

11-11:15pm Sparkler send-off

Thank you in advance for any help/guidance Smiley smile

I think it looks good and is long enough. Our wedding is from 3-8. The only thing I might change is having something a little heavier than fruit and cheese for cocktail hour since people will be getting hungry, even if it's just one other item that has meat or bread. Otherwise, I think it looks great!

I agree! Unfortunately, our venue does all of the cooking and these were the only options for appetizers. I think I may address this with them though and see if there is any way we could add something else.

Thanks for your help Smiley smile

I agree with what she said as well. Pictures could take much longer than one hour. You never know. It might be good to check to see if they could provide something a little bit heavier. Have you considered doing a first look? You could then shorten the cocktail hour and go right into food.

So we are doing a First Look prior to the ceremony which will take about an hour as well. I was thinking this would be more so for the bridal party/pictures of my fiance and I. Whereas the cocktail hour would be for pictures of my fiance and I, as well as with our families.

I think it looks good. The only question I have is about the reception start time. Is 8:00 p.m. when you guys will be introduced at cocktail hour? Or is that when dinner will be served? I think you are starting to push it a little bit at 8:00 p.m. for dinner, so I would try and make sure that people are eating, or at least being served, no later 8:00 p.m.

8pm is when I was hoping dinner would be served. I was thinking due to the setup of the venue, that most people would start to move to seating/dining room during cocktail hour so they could sit down (the veranda has limited seating where cocktails will be served).

We are not going to have a formal introduction into the reception/none of the bridal party will dance when they come in. So I was thinking we could go straight into dinner by 8pm at the latest.

Will you have a DOC or a DJ? If so, either of them can help facilitate your guests getting to their seats so dinner is served on time. But I think your timeline looks good. Congratulations and good luck with everything!

We'll have a DJ, as well as a DOC provided by the venue (haven't heard that they do a whole lot though) so I definitely think the DJ can help with this. I'll make sure to mention it to him. Thank you for your help! Smiley smile

Depending on what you're hoping for in terms of a dancing and partying, I think it might be a little tight. At best, you've schedule 4:45 minutes, including the sparkler send off, so more like 4:30, because by the time people line up for the exit they are literally on their way out the door. Daughter's wedding was 6.5 hours (30 ceremony, hour cocktail party, 5 hours for dinner & dancing, etc.), 3:30-10pm (it was in January, so sunset was 5 pm, and they were trying to work around that). Even 6.5 hours went fast. I think dinner took almost an hour and a half. They were on-site for first-look and wedding party pictures by 1 pm, so in total we were at the venue for 9 hours.

Your timeline make work fine, just realize it may seem rushed.

I appreciate your insight and this is what I was worried about. I think my fiance and I will think this over once more, to make sure we aren't making everything too tight. Thanks again for your help Smiley smile
