In my opinion, those name change services are a waste of money. All of the forms you need to change your name are available online for free. Those services charge you for them. Changing your name is very easy and took me only a couple of weeks to change everything (SS card, drivers license, bank info, etc.) without the assistance of a name change service.

All these services do is charge you money for them to mail forms you can print for free online and provide a list of places you need to change your name at (which can also be found for free online). The process is pretty simple, and these services do not help with getting your information to the correct place much easier. The steps are to change your name with Social Security, and you'll have to call your local office to see how they are processing applications. Then, driver's license and passport. After that, it's everything else. When I changed my name, SS, DMV, and passport were the only 3 places with formal forms. Everywhere else just accepted an email with a scanned copy of my new driver's license and marriage certificate.

Waste of money. Why pay to have someone print out forms that you can find for free online?

I just changed my name and it was VERY easy! I mailed all my stuff to my local social security in a week I had everything back and a new social security card. Then I went to the DMV her in CA and it only took 30 minutes to get my DL. Now I am just waiting for it in the mail and it should be here in 5 days.

I wouldn't waste your money on a name changing service.

Agreed- just wait until things calm down and do it yourself. Not to scare you but I have heard stories where the Social Security office are very backlogged and are prioritizing other duties such as SS checks and not name changes.

Depending on your state you might be able to get started on changing some items. In my state in order to get anything started SS card and driver's license are first.
