New step daughter new step father dance

Liz, on September 4, 2020 at 11:29 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9
I am bringing a 10 year old daughter into this marriage and my FH wants to do a dance with her. We're having issues finding the right song. Closest we've come is My Wish - Rascal Flats, but we feel thats slightly impersonal.

Her bio dad walked out of her life at 7 years old saying he didn't want anything to do with her anymore. Due to her heartbreak from that I did not introduce my daughter into this new relationship for a very long time. They've only been around each other for 8 months and we've all been living together for 2 months. My FH wants to be the father to her that she really never had.
He is also dancing with his 16 year old daughter at the reception to My Baby You - Marc Anthony.
We wanted to keep the songs on a similar level.

Thanks for any help.

I would ask your daughter what she thinks. Does she have any favorite songs? Their relationship is still REALLY new. I wouldn't try to force anything super sentimental in such a public way, unless she is totally on board with that.

Ask your daughter what her opinion is. Does she want to have a dance? She's old enough to decide and pick out a song if she chooses.

I've already asked her for song ideas and she came up with "It's Raining Tacos" or "Let it Go," not exactly wedding material. She already tells him that she loves him and vice versa and she is okay with a sentimental song. She was all smiles when I played her "My Wish" it just doesn't really say what he wants it to say. One of the issues we have run in to with the song choice is that some are way too sentimental for the amount of time they have known each other.

She does want to have a dance, and she does have veto rights on the songs we present to her. Our issue is we just can't find good songs that would match the occasion. We're looking for recommendations for songs that we just don't know about as we've exhausted every list we've found online for (step)father/(step)daughter songs.

If she loves the songs, it shouldn't matter if they're wedding related. Lots of folks have dances at weddings to non-wedding songs.

Just choose something neutral. 'It's A Wonderful World' or 'I Hope You Dance'.

The first song that came to my mind was You'll Be in My Heart by Phil Collins

Well, It's Raining Tacos or Let it Go would certainly be age-appropriate and really light-hearted, fun, and memorable for your daughter. Smiley smile

The 2 she suggested are perfectly acceptable. They do not have to be sentimental if the relationship is new. Keep it fun with what she has already picked.

I would let her dance to "it's raining tacos". I can't say I've heard it, but it might be light and fun especially because it's a rather new relationship they are building and slow dancing to a song for 3 minutes might be too much. This is coming from someone who had a step parent.
