The first thing you do is talk to the bride about each other's expectations and limits. Some brides will expect you to be a full-fledged assistant or planner, other to be a shoulder to lean on, others yet just to stand next to them. The important thing is to both be on the same page.

I agree with pp that communication about expectations is key. Included in that conversation should be what's an acceptable financial commitment as far as you're concerned (e.g., what's your max budget for dress and any required accessories, and anything else SHE's expecting you to pay for/contribute to -- like shower, bachelorette, travel expenses, hair & makeup, etc.). Many brides would only expect you to pay for your dress, but read enough of these posts and you'll find examples of those who fully expected their wedding party members to spend a lot of $$$. Hopefully, your friend has pretty reasonable expectations, but you want to know going in. Good luck! Smiley heart

With my best friends I didn't really have them do anything for the wedding. I didn't really need their help but I'm sure other brides ask their bridesmaids to help them with making centerpieces or invites and what other things. So def ask her what her needs are and how you can help support

I’ve been a MOH many times. I agree with other poster about talking to the bride about finances and how involved you want to be. Typically as a MOH, I’ve helped plan the wedding, gone dress shopping for her and again with the bridesmaids, coordinated/collaborated with the other bridesmaids about the bachelorette party and usually talked to the bride’s mom and others regarding the bridal shower.

One thing I always notice at weddings is when the bride goes to the front to get married and the back of her dress gets messed up- I’m always silently trying to send mental thoughts to the MOH “FIX HER DRESS” so it lays right and looks good in ceremony pictures. Lol
