New Job & Time Off

So I have just accepted a new job, and I will start April 12th. But I am getting married September 12th. When do I need to tell them about time off for the wedding and honeymoon? I will have been there for about 5 months before my wedding day. I’m afraid my new job may be upset with me. Help

I would tell them after your probation period is over. Then you can will have accrued your vacation time.

At orientation when they ask do you have any scheduled tile off, mind you if you need a long time off it may jeopardize your job based on their policy

Hey Faith, you shouldn’t be worried about this. You’re getting married in 5 months not like one week after. Tell them as soon as you start. I started in January, getting married in May and I told them after a month and they were excited and approved my vacation. Check your PTO policy..some only require few weeks notice, some months.

I will have my career for a few months before our wedding as well. Tell your boss asap. The sooner the better! Good luck Smiley smile

I don’t agree with the “forgot to tell you” or mentioning it in the interview process. A week is not a a significant chunk of time considering the investment in a new employee. Weddings, funerals, pre planned major life events, etc are very different than a “hey I’m taking off next week” after working a month.
And it will be a very good way to gauge the work life balance of your new job - if they balk at taking time off for your own wedding that was planned long before you even applied - you know that it won’t be a supportive environment to grow your career and have a life outside of work.

Agreed! Director here, and I have employees on the fence with probation so what they are doing in 6 months may not be relevant..

Really, really depends on the size of the company you are working for. If it is a small local business where the owner gets to know you from day 1 and they don't even have an HR department then I would recommend telling them ASAP. If you are dealing with a large corporation then going to HR for info on leave and time off would be your best bet. Then, depending on what you learn, react accordingly. The advice you have already gotten on that route from previous posters is solid.

Every job is different. My current job had a 6 month probation when I started (I work in local government). I used to work for a tiny law office where 2 weeks off needed months of planning so the one other staff person who could cover for me was guaranteed to be there.
Good luck and congrats on the job and the wedding!
