New job, 1 month until married

Brittany, on September 21, 2019 at 10:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
I’m not sure if this is where I should post this but I am clueless and need advice! So I start a new job in 2 days, my boyfriend just joined the military (went through bootcamp and everything, he is in A school now) 2 months ago and we got engaged Sep 15th, we have been throwing the idea of just getting married at the courthouse at the end of October and saving for a nice wedding September 2020. The job I got has opportunities to transfer states if you move. This job is no “degree job“ or huge career to be settling down in and I’m newly 20 years old. I want to go back to college in the next year so this is a good job to keep while earning my degree. Anyways, when I fill out these tax forms and legal things this week, are they going to get annoyed if I have to change it in a month or two because I got married? Is it like a whole new hiring process with a new last name and tax forms? I’m just sooo confused and know nothing about legality with marriage. If you have ANY tips on courthouse marriages(in Illinois), marrying when you start a new job, how anything works. Let me know! Again I know nada besides what marriage is! Hahahah

Most companies would be pissed if they hired you and you said nothing about moving and then a month or two later want them to relocate you. The more training they give the less happy they will be.

Personally (as someone who eloped at 19 with a guy fresh out of boot camp and in a school), I’d be engaged and stay put for now. Focus on saving for a wedding and getting your own life on the track you want. See where he gets stationed and a feel for when he’ll get deployed then let him settle into his new job.

I know now it’s super attractive to just be married, move where he is and start this grand new adventure together, A year seems like eternity at your age. But it isn’t. If you are meant to be, a year apart will be no big deal and actually great training for life with a serviceman. But if you aren’t, the year apart can be really telling and save you heartache later.

That said... changing your name with your company usually just requires a copy of your marriage license and new drivers license. Not a big deal.

Heya totally appreciate the feedback! I didn’t put too much detail into this. So I wouldn’t be moving for another 6-7 months. We have been together 2 years today, literally together everyday, inseparable. He left 2 months ago for bootcamp, graduated the 13th of this month, his A school is two years long. Our idea was if we got eloped now we could save the BAH money for wedding, moving, etc. I’ve been in college for a while and just confused with my career path, I want to do wildlife biology but I have to save for college as well, so that’s down the line for me.
Regarding the name changing-job thing, that sounds pretty simple.

My upcoming marriage will be my second marriage.
I got married at 20 to a guy that was about to join the military (I also live in IL). The bah money is huge, especially if you live in the Chicago suburbs (it’s based on your zip code for people that don’t know). And then factor in bonuses for being separated from your family etc etc. I went back to school while my ex husband did basic in TX and then his first duty station was Korea so we got hardship pay as well. I also had medical insurance that I wouldn’t have had if we had not been married. If this is your guy and you want to be together forever and you’re sure, I say yes 100% get married before he joins the military, the money and benefits are a huge deal. If you’re not sure, then wait. I should have waited. I got pressured from my ex by all the incentives of being married.
I wouldn’t worry about your new job. Changing your name is no big deal ever. I’d focus on school and figuring out what you want your life to look like. Be sure you’re ready to be a military wife. It is not easy. His job will always come first and he will always have to go where they send him. Be prepared to be separated or not have a career, especially in the beginning when he will be moving around a lot. And you will be alone. A lot. Especially if he gets sent overseas. It is not super easy to move to Korea or Europe (army duty stations, don’t know what branch he is). I moved to Korea and we still had only a few hours together in the evenings. Keep on mind when you move the bah changes to that zip code, so the money of most cities will not compare to the Chicago suburbs.
Good luck! I don’t think changing your name on tax forms is really a question because that’s truly a nonissue, decide if it’s the right time to get married. In hindsight I should have waited to see what life would be like, and if it was really a life I wanted.

Unless there’s a reason to rush, I wouldn’t push it up. Enjoy being young and engaged, and use this time to get settled in your new job. As for changing your name and marital status, that’s fairly easy once you have your marriage certificate. It wouldn’t change anything as far as your employment status.

Your post says there are opportunities to move states via transfer. i don't think that's a terrible thing, i mean it could be seen as so but sometimes life takes us to where we don't expect Smiley smile

I don't thing changing names at work is the hugest deal. I haven't actually done it but I would just talk to HR when the time comes, they've definitely dealt with it before. I would just make sure it's in you contract that you can move to any other office locations and it's not limited by time of service, job title change etc. Most places don't freely move employees after a few months because it can be expensive for them but if it's in your paperwork that's great!
