Nervous about wedding planner

Morgan, on July 10, 2020 at 12:56 AM Posted in Planning 0 9
Hey there! So, my fiancé and I hired a wedding planner about a month ago. Her and I had talked off and on before we actually hired her for a couple months. Note that we’ve put the deposit down, it’s impossible to get even a FaceTime meeting with her. We hired her for help planning and coordinating. And so far in the last month she’s had an excuse to reschedule every meeting we’ve set up. We haven’t signed a contract yet because we haven’t had a meeting since the deposit has been paid. Am I going to be able to get my deposit back from her? I haven’t said anything to her just yet. Didn’t really know how to go about it. Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!

I think the lesson to be learnt from this exercise is to not put down any money before you sign a contract, because otherwise you've essentially committed to a contract without looking at it or having a proper read over the terms and conditions.

I would reach out to the planner and express your concerns and make it clear to her that you do not feel like you've received what you bargained for and want your money back and that you will not be proceeding with using her services. You'll need to stand your ground on this one.

Perfectly said! I will say, without signing a contract, you will likely be able to get your deposit back. If not, try expressing your concerns to her and seeing what else she can offer. Good luck!!!

Having a deposit before a contract is really weird. Normally, the contract comes first. That’s where you agree upon everything, including the deposit to paid and the deadline to pay it. Her wanting the deposit first seems like a red flag.
Since nothing was signed, there’s nothing to prove the deposit isn’t refundable. Still, it may be really difficult to get the money back from her. Be prepared for that.

I’d just have a lawyer call her. I wouldn’t even ask for the money back from her, I’d just go straight to a lawyer. She’ll probably get nervous if your lawyer calls asking for your money and I think she’ll probably give it back at that point. If not, just keep bothering her until she gives it back to you.

I would let her know based on the perceived availability of her schedule that you are more comfortable going a different direction. I would ask for the money back, but depending on how much it was, if she puts up a fight I probably wouldn’t pursue it too hard. Unless it was a very substantial deposit. I agree with others here, it is odd to put a deposit down before the contract usually they go hand-in-hand. I’m sure this is a crappy situation, I hope it all works out for you!

You can contest the charges if it was charged by stating they did not uphold their end if in fact it's only been a month. Again you don't have a contract so the planner can't deny it.

I hope you get this all worked out! Sounds like an unfortunate situation. I also agree, odd to have no contract and deposits paid. Maybe you have some email communication to back you up? Good luck.

Oh man, like others said, definitely unusual to pay before signing anything. Hope it works out!

Well, without contract it´s nearly impossilble to get it back. You have no proof that you´ve paid the desposit.
