Nervous about alteration costs

on February 28, 2021 at 2:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22
Hey, so alterations for me begin in April and as I near closer the more and more nervous I am for the possible costs. Since implementing covid PPE costs of things like masks and sanitizers and more tables to allow household seating, tent rental to move outside and live stream costs, I am afraid I just won’t have wiggle room in the budget for crazy costs. My MIL thinks no alterations for my dress are needed, and if so then very little cutting of the length. I pray she is right, but just to get an idea of the ball part of alteration pricing, can I know how much it cost to have your dresses altered? I won’t have anything added to the dress, I love it as it is.
I didnt have any shoes on so hopefully with my 4.25 inch heels it’ll give me enough height. I also want to keep the train as long as it is. I am trying still losing weight for the wedding but the corset drawstring back is adjustable. I appreciate your input on this.

I got my dress hemmed, the bust taken in, and a bustle and it cost around $600. I'm getting it done at the boutique I got my dress from which is normally a bit more expensive than going to an independent seamstress. You'll probably at least need a bustle if you plan to dance at your rehearsal

At the moment I’m not looking into having a bustle, I’m not having a dancing wedding, aside from special dances.

Your dress is beautiful and it fits you perfectly. I paid $435 to have my dress altered. I had it taken in on the sides, hemmed and bustled.

If the hem is your only issue, it’ll be much cheaper than the average alterations. Typically seamstress charge by the amount of layers needed to cut and hem.

I found a seamstress that will be bustling and taking in my dress (1-2 sizes) for about $200. I’m wondering if I should get it hemmed for our beach elopement though I may use it again for the reception sometime in the future.

The dress looks amazing on you. Don’t think much is needed other than a hem (but hopefully high heels with do though!). I had my dress hemmed (it had 3 layers) and it cost $200.

Okay you look amazing!! Looks like the only alteration needed would be a hem (even if you want to keep the train, a hem in the front might still be needed to help you walk!). In San Francisco, for a hem for my three layers+lace, bustle addition, and bust padding adjustment, I’m paying $350 (and I know the bustle cost $100). I went to a no frills alterations place, and even though its not a super lavish ambiance, I know I’m getting a fair price rather than getting it done at a bridal shop/wedding alterations place.

I was also nervous about the additional costs for alterations, but for the amount already spent on the dress, that extra $$ is likely worth it so that it you have zero worries on your day!

Oh wow, I hope my alterations don’t cost that much, that would be me paying the same price I paid for the dress 😳. Did you go to the shop your got your dress? I am and I’m nervous getting alterations done at the boutique will be more expensive. I just didn’t know who else to trust with the dress other than the shop that sold it to me. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, 200 is a great price! I’m hoping for a price in that area at most as well (fingers crossed)

Thanks so much! I hope the heels are high enough too. It honestly I am so short (5’0) so Idk if it’ll be enough lol. 200 seems like a fair price. I wish I knew how many layers my dress was.

. Awe thank you so much ☺️ yeah I agree with the hem in the front especially since my entrance is me descending from stairs 🥴 I’ll need as much help walking as I can get: I think my shop offers no frills as well. I have to look into more of what that is exactly. I’m getting mine done at my dress boutique and am super nervous that the prices will be higher just because it’s a wedding dress boutique

The boutique gave me a list of seamstresses- i looked at the reviews & she was the best. I budgeted $1500 for my dress & alterations. Dress was $810 so went a little over by $80. My dress has detailed lace & I needed 3 inches hemmed. The bodice had to have the cups taken out. I lost weight so a total of 2.5 inches had to be taken in. Nervous about alteration costs 4

I honestly don't know what you'd need to change about the dress - you look amazing exactly as it is right now!! I think my alterations were $280, but I had a little length taken off, the torso area taken in, cups put in, and the strap things adjusted too. So I hope that *if* you end up needing any alterations, it would be much less than that!! Best of luck to you in the planning, and congratulations on such a gorgeous dress!

My Pronovias gown was taken in at the sides, hemmed, and french bustled which was typical alterations. It cost me a whopping $689 which I was mad about. I didn't realize how much it would cost me. My veil cost $875. I wasn't thrilled about that, either LOL but I know cathedral length veils are expensive.
