Need to sell engagement ring and wedding band

Tonya, on August 25, 2019 at 10:38 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23
I need help finding places that will buy wedding rings. It's a Neil Lane from Kay's and the cost was a little over 3k. The wedding has been called off and on trying to sell the ring to pay off the balance on card.

I know on the Kay's website they have "resale" jewelry, so it might be worth asking. (I have heard that reselling any good jewelry, but especially wedding sets, usually results in a pretty big loss off the purchase price.... Sorry.)

Thank you. They don't do buybacks. I can trade and then they resell.

So, you ex-fiancé purchased the ring on your credit card? Or his credit card? If it’s his card, then he’ll have to be the one to deal with the situation unless you’re on the account.

How long have you had the rings?

There’s usually a grace period that they allow you to bring the rings back without penalty.

I would try Facebook marketplace before I would try to sell it back to the jewelry store. You’re going to take a major loss no matter what route you take.

It was my card and we've had them since January of this year and the grace period has passed.

I'm sorry the wedding was call off and you got stuck with a credit card bill. I don’t think there’s much loss there. A friend of mind sold her ring after her divorce and got a good amount for it. Of course the jewelers have to make money for it which is why the price devaluates. I also recommend try selling on your own but you can always check local jewelry stores to see what they offer.

Thanks everyone. I do have it on fb marketplace and I'm sure it will take time to get some hits. It's hard when you were the financially responsible one and everything falls on you. The wedding industry can be brutal. You lose out on tons of money when you don't go forward with things. Thanks again everyone!

Try visiting smaller jewelry stores and seeing if they purchase jewelry! If you have the paperwork still I would suggest bringing that in, might help you get more for it. I was in a similar situation previously, and I brought in my ring and was able to sell it to the jewelry store in my hometown.

When I worked in a jewelry store, I'd recommend this place when people came in asking the same thing: https://www.idonowidont.com/

If you haven't had it appraised yet make sure you do that. That way when you are posting to sell it people have proof it's a legit ring and they aren't going to get ripped off.

I am sorry that you are going though this and that the cost of the ring is falling on your shoulders. I hope things work out for the better - I know they will. Hang in there!

Thank you. It's really hard because I paid the deposits so I'm out 11k and that's not including the ring. It's just awful but I'll get through it. I'm hoping he does the right thing and help with the expenses.

I second this. Not just because of the proof of legitimacy (which is extremely important for the customer), but an appraisal can also give you an idea of how much you can resell it for.

If he doesn't, try small claims.

Also, gold prices are going through the roof right now, so that does add more value to your ring, if it's gold. Silver has gone up as well. I'm not sure about platinum, but I'm sure that has as well.

I am so sorry that you are going through this! I've read other threads here where people say that it's so important for the couple to be in a good place financially before getting married and bringing one's partner into their debts by legal marriage. For him to put you into debt along with him is wrong.

I may not be financially stable on my own, but I've learned to be responsible for the little I do have. Good luck, friend!

Thank you! I was in a very good place financially and I had a plan to pay off the debt but he never stuck to the plan. It's going to take a while before things return to some type of normalcy but it will happen! Thanks for the kind words
