Need help finding a DJ for a simple backyard wedding/reception in MI

Becky, on May 7, 2011 at 10:06 AM Posted in Planning 0 8

Having a backyard wedding in Clarkston, MI on 7-9-11 Looking for a DJ that will be in the background while guest arrive, my walk down the aisle, first dance, parent dance, than just play music if guest want to dance. My FH and I are not big dancers. I don't think dance floor will be the main focus of the reception. We will be having lawn games, fire pit later on in the evening. I am not from the area and planning my wedding from VA. Any suggestions...I have emailed some vendors over the weekend and no luck.

I would start with checking on vendors on this site, and on the knot.com, also ask family and friends for local suggestions. Other suggestions (though there will be a howl of protest over this) might be Craigs List or Google searches?

I was reading an artical about weddings and budgets. one couple wedding budget was 20,000. you would think they hired a professional dj, but the bride stated that they used an ipod.. so the dj fee was 0$.free is alway good. something you could consider being that you having a simple wedding reception.

First of all, I agree. Check out the vendors section here. Another great source not already mentioned is the American DJ Association (www.adja.org).

I'm going to disagree with Mrs Mcfee. an iPod wedding is NOT a $0 investment. Even if you have all the music and don't have to purchase any tunes... you would have to rent a PA system to allow the music to be heard. Maybe a home stereo would do the trick, but of course then you wouldn't have a microphone or a way to do announcements and/or a toast that could be heard. You would also have to use some extension cords... i'm sure you don't want orange extension cords showing up on your wedding photos... the price starts jumping up quickly with DIY music. I've shared this before, but it's worth repeating:

Yes, the video is highly biased, but I think it gives you some great insight on what you will have to consider if you want to do an iPod wedding.

    Best Wishes!

Try the American Disc Jockey Association's web page: www.adja.org.

In a pinch/bind, you can try craigslist... but be careful as you typically will get what you pay for.

Shot in the dark here... you did't get a call back... maybe... because of your budget. A DJ may not want to work with his/her equipment in a back yard for minimal pay. Not saying that's right, but it's real life.

What Carlos said... craigslist may be your best bet, or use an iPod.

Be sure to interview the DJ in person before you sign.
