Need advise: Removing the train completely from an a-line wedding dress?

Alana, on January 22, 2023 at 9:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hi everyone!

As my wedding is getting closer, there's one thing about my wedding dress that's still bothering me: the train/skirt.

I feel like there's so much fabric at the bottom and there's no shape at all. I was wondering whether any of you have had the train completely removed and how did it look like? I shared my thoughts with the seamstress, and she suggested adding a bustle instead. However, what would be the point of adding a bustle if I don't particulary want the train at all? Our wedding is going to be outside on the woods, so I would definitely not want my dress to be touching the floor and getting all the dirt from the floor.

I am attaching a few images from the dress so you can maybe advise me whether cutting off the train completely would look good. It's an a-linie with tulle. I am also attaching the official pictures from the dress.

Thank you for any help you might be able to provide! Smiley smile

I have done this! I was the MOH in a wedding and the dress the bride fell in love with had a tulle train like this, so we just had the seamstress remove it completely. It turned out perfectly! You would have never known the dress ever had a train.
I agree with you, if you don’t want a train at all, there is no point in adding a bustle - It is more costly, more work, and not nearly as pretty!

What a beautiful dress! I haven’t tried this, but if the seamstress you’ve been speaking with is trying to talk you out of it, I would go to another one just to make sure. It might just be something she’s not skilled at but another one might be.

I ordered my dress without a train because I hate bustles. They usually look bad, and turn a nice dress into making you look like one of the evil step sisters in Cinderella.

If you want no train go for it! I would also suggest a second opinion for seamstress.

Since the hem of the skirt/train does not have any lace or other trim, I think it would be easy to cut it off.

I had my train removed and the hem taken up a couple of inches. It was complicated because there were lace details on the bottom that had to be removed and out back. A skilled Seamstress would be able to do yours.

I haven't done this yet but am planning to! I also have an a-line dress with a tulle train. I'm not a huge fan of trains (especially ones without much intricate detail) and I agree with Alyssa about hating bustles.

You do you! Don't let your seamstress or anyone else try to change your mind. I think you should consider getting a second opinion in case your seamstress lacks the skill needed to do this.

My dress was very similar and I got a bustle and regretted it. I wish I had just cut the train part off, I think it would’ve looked much better. Also, when I had the train down, like you I had an outdoor wedding, and all sorts of things got caught in the tulle. …and I hated the bustle, lol. It looked good when the seamstress did it, but when my bridesmaids and I did it on my wedding day it looked sloppy!

Thank you so much to everyone and for the advice of seeking a second opinion. At the time of the purchase, the seamstress was quite pushy so I accepted to get a bustle (mistake!). Fortunately, it's just a tiny unnoticeable button at the back of the dress, so I am really going to look for another seamstress to actually remove the train. Quite mad at me for accepting something I was not convinced of, it's incredible the presure you get with these kind of things.

Some people are really hesitant for brides to cut off their trains. I'm not sure why. I'm in the same boat and it just comes across as weird and pushy.

I’m planning on doing this too! I spoke to one seamstress who was fine with it.

I removed the train from my tulle a-line dress and it was one of the best decisions I made! My seamstress was totally onboard. She described bustling this type of dress as looking like the step sisters from Cinderella (remember how big their butts were in their ball gowns? lol). You do you and don't let anyone else pressure you to change your vision!

I did not add a petticoat but there was one already sewn into my dress, so it was already on the fuller sideNeed advise: Removing the train completely from an a-line wedding dress? 5
