Need Advice on Wedding Catering – Food, Heating, and Logistics

He Momo, on April 17, 2025 at 2:26 AM Posted in Planning 1 1

Hi everyone!

I'm currently planning my wedding (super excited!), but I’m running into a few questions about the catering part, and I’d really love to hear your thoughts or experiences.

Here’s what I’m wondering:

  • What kind of food is usually served at weddings, and how do you decide on the menu?

  • How do you keep food warm throughout the event, especially if it’s a buffet-style setup?

  • Do I need to hire a professional chef, or are there good alternatives?

  • Can I customize the dishes, or do most vendors only offer fixed menus?

A bit of context: My family previously hosted large gatherings and we have a Wilprep commercial Food Warmer

(keeps food hot for a long time). I'm wondering if it could be useful for the wedding, or if professional caterers usually bring their own setup.

Any tips, advice, or things you wish you’d known when organizing your wedding food would be super appreciated! Smiley heart

Hi there. Per your question on hiring a professional chef, your venue may have specifics on who can cater. In the US, all my vendors needed liability insurance and all food handlers needed to have food safety certifications to work. So I would check with your venue. Next, determine if you want plated or buffet, casual or more formal event, and lunch or dinner meal, or non- meal. For plated (in the US) I've seen hosts offer appetizers, salad, main course, dessert and/ or wedding cake. The main course is often animal protein like chicken or a vegetarian option and chosen by the guest. Others may give insight as to buffet options. Some catering companies bring their own Sternos and chafing dishes, but I've seen hosts rent them themselves for home functions. Best wishes with your planning!
