Name Changing during Covid-19

Carson, on March 23, 2020 at 12:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

Hello, everyone!

I hope that everyone is being safe out there during this pandemic!

My new husband and I got married March 14, 2020, and I had always planned to go ahead and start with the process of name changing. However, due to the circumstances, all federal & state offices are closed (to the public, at least).

My question is, really, would it be okay to go ahead and send in documents to the SSA?

OR just wait until this all blows over?

Thank you for your input!

I would probably just wait. You have to mail them your official social security card and marriage certificate. You don't want those just sitting around forever. You also don't want to be without your social security card for an unknown amount of time, just in case.

I would wait as most/all governments offices are closed until further notice. I would hate for you to send your documents in and them get lost.

Call your local office and ask. Mine told me to go ahead and mail everything in. They were more than happy to mail back my certified copy of my marriage certificate with a note in the paper. I would recommend sending it certified with a tracking number. Social Security is considered an essential government service, so they will be working, just not open to the public.

I'd call and ask. Idk if our SS offices are open, but I know our DMV is closed.

I'd call and see what they say! I called Thursday, and they told me to go ahead and mail everything to them. I sent everything on Thursday evening, and it was supposed to arrive today. They said it'd only be a few days til I got my stuff back after they received everything.

Congrats on your wedding, Carson! How much did you have to change in order to still get married?

I'd call and see, some govt offices are closed but some are up and running and may just have a delay in getting things processed. It'll totally depend on where you are.

As long as your state doesn't have a time limit on it, wait. It's going to be a low priority as soon as all the state agencies open and will take 10x longer than usual which is already slow.

I called our local office and they're still changing names on cards, just not open to the public. She said I'd have my documents back in 4-5 business days!

Thank you! I didn't have to change anything as far as wedding! I had a few close friends who didn't get to come because of quarantine, but stuff didn't really start hitting the fan here in Texas until we came back from our "Plan B Honeymoon"-- Broken Bow, OK. Our original honeymoon was postponed because it was a cruise Smiley sad

I did purchase the stuff from HitchSwitch. However, I wouldn't recommend it if you're trying to save money. They just send you the applications and instructions, you still have to do everything yourself, and you can find checklists on Pinterest or google. Just a heads up! Smiley shame

What original documents did you need to mail in? Have you gotten your documents and new SS card yet? I'm definitely nervous to mail everything in but figure it'll be a lot worse to do in person when the offices open again and everyone tries to go at once.

I mailed in the certified copy of my marriage certificate and a note that I wanted it back. It took me about 2.5 weeks to get the certificate back and 3.5 to get my new social security card. Your local office should be able to give you an approximate timeline too.

What else did you have to send in? I sent in a copy of my drivers license, passport, AND an official signed marriage license and they sent a letter back saying it wasn’t enough and they needed “original documents”...

According to the SSA application, you only need to send in a form of identity if the marriage certificate doesn't have enough information to identify you. Has anyone just used the marriage certificate and that's it?

I was told you send in the certified marriage certificate and your actual drivers license or passport.

That is all I sent it. But make sure it is the certified copy. Not just a copy you made at home.
