Name Change

Becca, on September 15, 2019 at 1:05 PM Posted in Planning 1 22
Hello beautiful WeddingWire people!

I hope your day is lovely and that all your planning days are fantastic. How many days do you have left? I have 41 days left. I have one main question left in my planning that I need some help/guidance. We are getting married in my hometown, but we will be moving to a different state. My question is how long after the wedding do I have to change my name? I won’t be moving out of state until later (May, but I’ll be visiting him in December). I’m wrapping up my Ph.D. early next year.

I have 33 days. Each state is different with that. My best suggestion would be to contact the DMV (we call in Secretary of State in Michigan) and ask them. They be the best bet for you

I don’t think there’s a time limit to when you can change it. You can change it whenever, even years later.

I've been married twice now and both times I waited about a year before I changed my name legally.

Oh thanks for that insight. I’m glad I can wait a while to change the name legally.

I would call your state and check. Everyone on here kept telling me I could do it whenever I wanted but I live in NH and the DMV makes it very clear that you only have 30 days to change your name without needing to go to court to change it.

Like others said, it depends on the state, but typically there isn’t a deadline.

Same! (Michigan Bride also). Definitely check your state laws so you can plan accordingly. Smiley smile

In the State of NY, your name legally changes immediately after your officiant sends in the signed paperwork. I would contact your county/borough’s courthouse just to find out the process in your State. I’m from PA and I know there, you have to bring a certified copy of your license to social security to change your name. So technically, there you can wait as long as you’d like.

The only deadline I had in IL with changing names is once I changed my social security card I had like 2 weeks after that to change my DL.

Thank you so much Marissa. I'm just slightly confused on this whole process and how to fully plan for the name change. I'm in MS finishing up schooling. Getting married in Fl. Once I'm done with school, I will be moving to GA, where FH lives and work.

Gotcha! I would contact the place where you’ll be applying for your license in Florida. They will definitely have more info for you and set you in the right direction.

    I’m getting married on 9/21/19‼️

Not sure if there’s a time limit where I am.

However, license expires on my birthday, so I’ll be waiting until then to make any changes.

However, FH is fine with me NOT changing it. I can be Mrs. Married name socially.

    Congratulations and 🍀‼️

We're getting married in 82 DAYS!!!

Here in MD you can change your name whenever you want. A friend of mine didn't change hers for fours years! Smiley xd Smiley xd

I would check with your current state's DMV and district courts as well as your new states'.

    26 days here!

I actually don't think there is a time frame. I would probably do it before finishing your degree because then everything will already be done there in the proper name but that would just be my opinion. I plan on doing mine as soon as we get back but thats because we plan on traveling in April so I want all my documentation to reflect properly.
