Name Change

Hey everyone So my FH and I decided to skip out on an actual wedding due to finances and family drama so we’re going the “courthouse” way. Since we’re getting married literally this weekend and I’m wanting to change my last name I have no idea where to start on that or how so any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

You take your signed marriage certificate to the social security office, and then you can go to the dmv. Once you’re official there you can do your passport, bank accounts, cards, employment, insurance, doctors offices and anywhere else important.

You’ll have to wait to receive your marriage certificate before you can start the process. Once you receive that, you’ll apply for a new social security card. It can be done in person or via mail. In some states, you can use the receipt from the social security office to get a new license, in some you’ll have to wait to receive the card. Once you have your social and license, you can start changing things like bank accounts and doctors office records.

It depends what state you're in. In pa my friend got married at the courthouse and got her paperwork back immediately, then you take that to the SS office.

I'm in California, and when we applied for the marriage license I had the option to change my name right then and there. Once the license was signed and mailed back to the courthouse, I received my marriage certificate with my name changed. If you can do it that way, I recommend it. I read if I didn't change my name then, I would have had to go before a judge and make the change.

Once you get your marriage certificate, go to the Social Security Office and get your Social Security Card updated (read online beforehand what you need to bring!). Then you can update your drivers license, and then your passport. Once you get your license updated, you can do bank accounts, bills, insurance, etc.
