Name Change???

Katie, on August 25, 2019 at 9:50 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9
Hey ya’ll! Here’s the scoop...
My drivers license expires 3 months before my wedding and honeymoon cruise. Do i change my name with my new license and order a passport with my future married name, or wait til after the honeymoon and get new of both?
We are planning more vacations outside of the US in future years to come. I just don’t want to jump the gun, but I also know it’s expensive?

You'll need your marriage certificate before you can change any of your id's. Check with the DMV to see if you can change your name so soon after renewing it without a fee.

You cannot get documents in a new name without your certified marriage certificate (unless you go to the work and expense of a legal name change outside of your marriage). You'll have to get/renew the documents in your maiden name and then get them with your new name after you have your paperwork. Once you have the marriage certificate, you'll have to start with social security before you can get your new driver's license and passport. The good news is you can get an updated passport because of a name change without paying a new fee (except to mail the documents) for up to a year from when the passport was issued (so, get it when you get your license and you'll have 9 months after the wedding to get an updated one). In the meanwhile, book all travel after the wedding but before you'll have time to get your new documents in your maiden name (and don't do your name change until after you return). Good luck!

You will need your marriage certificate to change your name so unfortunately you will have to wait.

I'm kind of in the same boat, my DL expires in October and my passport expired a couple of months ago. I didn't get the new Real ID for my DL, I just paid the $36 fee and renewed and will have to pay again after we are married for my DL Real ID. I let my passport expire and will get a new one after we are married. I should have just renewed passport before it expired but I completely forgot it expired this year. We aren't going out of the country on a honeymoon so I will be fine for now.

You’ll need a new license with your maiden name first. It’s annoying, but is what it is. You’ll need a valid license/ID to apply for your marriage license , and you’ll need the marriage certificate before you can kickstart the name change process, and in the name change process, everything takes a little time (you’ll need to update your license before you can update your passport, etc). So if you’ll need a passport for your honeymoon, you’re better off getting one now , in your maiden name, and then changing it once you’ve returned. On the plus side, the passport office cooperates here— if you apply for a name change within a year of getting your passport, you will not have to pay again!

You can't do anything in your new name without the marriage license. So just renew them both now since you will need them. When you get back from your honeymoon - you will be able to update your passport for no charge (you'll have to send your marriage license and some other forms).
