Name Change Timeline

FinallyMrsJennings, on March 30, 2017 at 7:53 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Hello,

We are getting married in 10 days! I'm so excited! But we also got some news on Monday that is a huge game changer. We are going to have to relocate for my FHs job as his current location is shutting down as of May 1st. Aside from the stress of having to pack up our lives and move hundreds of miles away in just about 30 days, I've been thinking a lot about how I should go about changing my name.

Do you think I should wait until we have definitely moved to begin the process, or should I start the process right after we get the marriage certificate? I'm worried that things are going to overlap and I won't get everything I need in the mail and whatnot with the addresses changing. And I don't know where we are moving yet so I can't use a new address.

Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

-Kaitlyn

Congrats, Kaitlyn! That's so exciting that you are that close.

Are you moving to a different state or just a different city? If it's a different state, I would definitely wait since you'll need to get a new driver's license anyways. I would probably wait until I was at the new address either way though, I would also be paranoid about the overlap.

Alternatively, do either of your parents live close? Maybe you could send all documents there?

Thank you! We'd be moving to a different state. My parents live close now but not to where we would be moving Smiley sad.

It depends on what ID you are talking about. Your name will change when you get married in many states, so the "changing your name" is really just updating identifications.

@MelissaHH very good point! It really seems like waiting might be the best option.

@A.L. ID as in Driver's License but I can't change that until my social security is changed as well, and who knows how long the SS office could take.

Definitely wait. In many states, name changes have to be published in the paper, and they may only do that once a month. If you miss the cutoff, it could take a couple months to get a court date. I used to work in the Probate Court, and there are a lot of rules, so there's little room for expedition.

@LikeBerry good to know! It sounds like I need to look into what the rules and everything are in the state we are moving to. Which I can't really do yet because I don't know where we will end up. But something to do as soon as know! Thanks!

I would wait until you've moved! It will still take a few business days for your marriage license to process after your officiant sends it in, and even if you go to the SS office in person they still mail you your new SS card - so you want to make sure you don't lose that in the mail!!

Look up the name change laws in whatever state you're going to be in! All states vary. For example, one poster said they had to register their name change within 30 days of their wedding (not sure what state though). In NY for example, I didn't run into any issues. It took about 10 days for the marriage certificate to come in. Then I went to the SS office. When I got my SS card, I went to the DMV, banks, etc. I hope this helps!
