Name Change Time Frame

How long did it take for you to finalize your name-change after the wedding? Counting from the social security forms, and other legal/otherwise-necessary stuff. There will be about 3-4 months from the wedding until when we estimate the honeymoon will be, and I’m hoping to make sure it’s all done so everything is updated, current, and matching. (Not today, TSA! Not today 😂)

The main things that you need changed by then are social security and then passport/drivers license. My new SSC came very quickly, and in my state they print up licenses in the DMV while you’re there. The biggest factor is going to be your passport. They were pretty delayed for awhile, so I’m not sure how long a turn around time they have as of now. This is of course assuming your honeymoon is international. I would double check lead times for passports, if you need 1 to travel, or wait until after you come back from your honeymoon to start the name change process. The time it takes to get your marriage certificate also varies by state. Ours came in about 2 weeks, but for others it can take 1-2 months.

I’ve been married for two and a half years and I still haven’t changed my last name.

Check the passport processing time and maybe call the agency to make sure the timing for your situation. Processing Times for U.S. Passports (state.gov)

They show normally 8-11 weeks plus mailling times but they have expedited processing of 5-7 weeks. That would be the long pole after getting the SSN name updated and the drivers license updated.
