Name Change Questions

Yese, on August 4, 2025 at 3:48 PM Posted in Planning 2 1

My fiance would like to add his mothers maiden name to his surname (wasn't added on his birth certificate). I'll be taking his current last name, so I assume him adding his mothers won't interfere with my name change.

The question(s) I'm asking are: would he need to add the surname before we file our marriage license or can we wait until after we get married? If his second surname is missing on marriage cert, will it pose an issue with his future name change with passport, SSN, etc?

I was hoping to change my surname on the marriage license app but NC doesn't have a line to do so, so I understand I'd have to change it after obtaining marriage license. Since he's adding a new one and not taking mine/hyphenating with me, I know we both have to go through the process. I was really hoping to knock it out in one go but unfortunately no lol.

I really just want to avoid mistakes. I will be asking register of deeds this week but wanted to reach out to anyone that has gone through something similar. Hopefully I'm tunnel visioning and taking a step away will help. IF you've read this far, THANK YOU!

If you want to keep his current surname, that needs to be his current surname on the application for the marriage. After being married and having the marriage license, the names on the license can be left unchanged and will not affect anything regarding later name or life changes.

The other option is to take the hyphenated name on the license and then you go through a legal process to go to use his original surname.

I'm just sharing what logically happens in the common marriage license processes. But it looks like it could be possible for him to change his last name before the license but let you use part of that surname since you are not creating a new surname. It is too technical for a good guess Smiley winking

Another thought is that some Hispanics will go by both the mom's maiden name (hyphenated) and their shorter surname. Maybe a search to navigate that convention will be helpful here.
