Name change process.....

Future Mrs. McCully, on July 19, 2019 at 9:11 AM Posted in Pennsylvania Planning 1 3

So I got married on Saturday, July 13th and I mailed in our marriage license information on Monday, July 15th.

I am confused on how to go about changing my name with the social security office.

Do I take the documents I already have? Or do I have to wait to receive our Marriage Certificate?

Any insight on experiences with changing your last name in Pennsylvania would be greatly appreciated!

I was going to call the office but I hear from everyone that they all get mixed answers so I was trying to go by experience. TIA!!

After your officiant signs the marriage license, take that to get filed at your local city hall (in Philadelphia it's at the Register of Wills). You'll received a certified copy of your marriage certificate. You need this document for everything else. The certified copy is the one with the raised seal. Bring that certified copy to the SS Office. You'll get a printed receipt from the SS Office.

My process took 2 days for the SSN and drivers license. I was lucky where my officiant gave us the signed marriage license at the ceremony. Some officiants will mail it for you instead, and that can then take a week or two.... We took it to get filed the Monday after the wedding and got our certified marriage certificate then and there. We then hit up the SS Office. Our DMV accepted the SS Office receipt as proof of name change with the certified marriage certificate.
