Name Change on Driver's License

Emily, on January 8, 2020 at 8:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
I changed my name at the social security office. However, my husband booked my plane ticket for our honeymoon in March with my maiden name, due to not having my drivers license updated. It expires in April. Am I ok to go ahead and keep that while updating my information such as work?

As long as your license matches the plane ticket it doesn’t matter what else you’ve changed! I changed my name at work before I changed it with social security even lol. When I came back after my honeymoon my coworker had already updated it on my desk, sent me new business cards, and IT changed my email 😂

That makes me feel better! I was saying I can sign my new name now, but I was unsure about waiting to update my drivers license.

Yep. Just make sure that if you need a passport to travel, you don't change the name on it.

We're going to Hawaii so I just need to drivers license. I just didn't know if it was ok to change my name, but wait 4 months to do the drivers license for that reason

Yeah, that's fine, assuming you're going to Hawaii soon after your wedding. Beginning October 1 of this year, you'll need a passport to travel to Hawaii (if you're going by air), unless your driver's license is Real ID compliant.

Thank you for that 😀 Yes, our ceremony is in February and we're going in March. My dl expires in April, so I'll take all my stuff then.

Your license, passport and name on the plane ticket all have to match but not your SSN
