Name Change Kit?

Caroline, on June 19, 2020 at 1:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

Is anyone planning on doing a name change kit? With government offices shut down and most places handling by mail anyway, I feel like this might be the simplest way to get all the forms in one place. But, maybe its a waste of money....I don't know!! What are your thoughts on them?

All of the forms that they provide are available online for free. Huge waste of money in my opinion.

All they do is collect forms for you, all of which are available for free online. They can't legally file them for you or anything, so you still have to do all the in-person things. I wouldn't waste your money.

I posted about this awhile ago! Everyone on the forum said waste of money. Everyone I talked to in person was shocked services like this existed and said having someone gather the info and send it to you was genius and a time saver.

So. I ended up doing NewlyNamed. I liked it the most because it filled everything out for your but never asked you for social security/secure info like that. I bought the option where they printed everything and sent it to you with stamped envelopes. When I called SSA to confirm where to mail it to, you’d be surprised at how often the info is incorrectly filled out. The gentleman walked me through it twice because I didn’t want to seem rude telling him he didn’t have to because I had it all pre-filled by a service 😂 It also comes with a checklist for each place you have to change it with. I really like that stuff was filled out and the checklist portion. The SSA one (only one I’ve done so far) had 2 detailed pages of instructions. You also go through a list of over 600 places where you select companies you need to change your name with and instructions for each (from social media to banking locations). I’m pretty Type A so this type of service was perfect for me and eased my anxiety.

It really took me no time at all to fill out the forms. They're all 1, maybe 2 pages long and free online. Most of them, you can fill them out on the computer as fillable PDFs and then just print and sign so you don't even need to handwrite things. The only forms I had were for SS, DMV, and passport. Every other company (bank, utilities, etc) just wanted a scanned copy of my marriage certificate if they wanted anything at all.
