Name change - is there a time limit?

Tanya, on August 27, 2020 at 10:13 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 3
Does anyone know if there is a limit in NYS for how long after your wedding you can start the legal process of getting a new Social Security card with your new last name? We are getting married in September, going on our honeymoon in January, and I don’t want to be in a “limbo” situation with changing my name on my passport. Thanks in advance!

Hi Tanya! I can't find anything online about a "time limit" or deadline by when you need to change your name!

Personally I started the process about 3 months after my wedding!

I just spoke with my local Social Security office in Washington State, and since it's a federal agency, I think the information they gave me should be the same for you. It sounds like you have four years after your marriage to begin the name change process in the most straightforward way possible (just a completed SS-5 form and your marriage certificate). You can still change your name after that, Social Security just needs additional documentation at that point to verify your identity. Enjoy your honeymoon!
