Name Change Hawaii Marriage Currently Living in California

Stephanie, on October 4, 2018 at 12:32 PM Posted in California Planning 0 9

This question is ONLY for people who live in CALIFORNIA and got married in Hawaii.

I want to take my FH's last name, but according to the State of California I have only 30 days after our marriage to do all of that, but the State of Hawaii doesn't mail the certificate for 120 days after the marriage.

Has anyone been through this?

I'm not sure how to change my name now. I guess just get the certificate under my current name and then go to court to do a name change?

If you got married in Hawaii and live in California, please help me understand the procedure. It's different in every state. Sadly the women we have to go to in Hawaii is awful, mean, nasty and of no help whatsoever.

THANKS in advance. Our wedding in Wed the 10th, so we have to decide how I should fill out my part.

I live in California and have never heard that you only have 30 days to change your name.

Did you get married in Hawaii and live here? I'm looking for people in that situation. Thanks

Okay, here is what I found out. FINALLY. YAY..

If you get married in California and put your new name on the certificate IN California--then you have 30 days to file your name change with social security and the DMV etc.

If you don't put your new name on the certificate, you can change whenever you want, but you have to go to court and do it that way.

When you get married out of state, you can do it at any time.

PHEW! Because Hawaii apparently doesn't send it for 120-160 days after you get married. Smiley smile

That's why I was asking if there are any brides who already got married in Hawaii but live here.

    It's so confusing. Smiley smile

I did not get married in Hawaii but it shouldn’t matter. I’m not aware of any states that have a time limit for when you need to change your name.

I’m getting married in California and not changing my name within 30 days. No one has ever told me that and I’ve had friends that haven’t changed it within 30 days and have had no issues.

It's only if you change your name on the certificate when you do the application. Or that is what I have been told. Maybe it's by county? Not sure, but I'm super happy that I got it all sorted. Thanks for commenting. Smiley smile It all helps.

No it's not by county in California. You can get your license from any county in California and use it anywhere in the state. And Kelly is right. I've been married twice now and both times in California. The first time I didn't start changing my name until about a year later and this time I just changed my name 8 months later. Both times I put my new name on the marriage certificate.
