Name Change During Covid in ca

MrsE2020, on May 20, 2020 at 11:57 AM Posted in California Planning 0 3

I received my new SS card with my name change but it's iffy now whether I can get into DMV to change my driver's license. I got a regular drivers license in October when mine expired thinking I'd just go into DMV after I changed my name for the REAL ID so I only have to go in once. Should I attempt the name change on the Driver's License or is it ok to wait? I was hoping more offices would be open by now but they're all about 45 mins to an hour away. Should I just wait on changing my name on anything else until I get my updated ID? Not sure how it all works. Thanks for any advice.

I would just wait for things to open back up, to me it’s frankly not worth the risk (idk about your local dmvs, but mine is a big open room full of people and every time I’m there seems to take an hour! No thank you).

Hold off changing your name on anything else until you have photo ID with your new name. Not only will most places not let you make the change until you have a corresponding photo ID, you could run into a pickle somewhere along the line if you did this (example going into a bank to withdraw something and they ask for an ID — if you had changed the name with the bank but not on your ID, they wouldn’t be able to verify the document and give you the money)

    That was my thought also.

Your driver's license is the next step, so definitely hold off on changing your name anywhere else!! People have run into the same issue with plane tickets booked under their maiden or married name - it needs to match your photo ID. (Although I assume most of us are grounded right now! Smiley winking )

I'd wait until you feel more comfortable with the local DMVs - and see if any of them start offering new services like scheduled appointments that would help you minimize contact!
