name change and law school? any lawyers around?

Hey there, congrats on taking the LSAT - it's scary but you can do it!!! I'm in law school (just finished first year) and just started the name change process. I would highly recommend waiting to change your name on your school stuff until after the LSAT. They are super picky about paperwork until you're score is out. I a actually ran into a problem because some of my paperwork had my middle initial, but other stuff didn't. It took probably 3 weeks just to sort that little difference out!!!

I agree with the others about waiting to change your name. But I'm purposely getting married before I graduate so I can have my new name on my JD. I think I'm keeping my old last name as a middle name though, so I can keep it without doing the hyphen that I don't like so much

I spoke with FH about this (he is an attorney) and he said he almost had a difficult time with his application because his middle name was misspelled. He said he waited until after the test and he was midway through his 1st year of law school before he corrected it. He said you should definitely wait until after you receive your score.

If you are going to keep your name professionally, it's best to keep it legally. The places where your legal name really matters are mostly at work--stuff like your W-2s, taxes, bar admission, etc. There is nothing to stop you from being known socially by your FH's name, even if you keep your own name legally.

Well I have same problem and got it sorted out after getting admission.These things are really tricky to solve.But proper documentation really makes it easy to some extent,just Saying.I have to go to our family lawyer to seek info about it and she really helped me.After few weeks got my name changed and all the trouble is gone now.

Well in such case, you can change the name by your own effort. You need not to take help any kind of lawyer.Just go through the procedure of name change and file it as per the scenario and the name will be changed.
