Name change and a move in the same month

Jenny, on November 11, 2019 at 5:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

We live in Chicago and are getting married June 6, 2020....and then planning to move out of state to Charlotte, NC by June 30, 2020 (which is obviously crazy, but that's how everything worked out). To make the planning even crazier, I do plan to change my last name.

Has anyone else moved out of state right after marriage? I know I'll need to go to the Social Security office here, but will I need to go to the IL DMV and pay to change everything, only to do it all over again in NC? Or can I wait to do it in NC? Or should I just get it all done in IL and wait to change everything in NC?

TIA, my brain is spinning!

I'm in the same boat! Were getting married may 9th in ct and planning on moving to Tennessee by the end of June. In CT I believe you dont necessarily have to change your name right away, you have a 60 day grace period. Not sure if IL is the same but with moving I would just call NC and ask their policy, you might just be able to change it at their dmv and not worry about changing anything in IL. I planned on calling both dmvs a month or so before the wedding to try and figure out how I'm going to do it haha. Good luck!

You can hold off on your name change. It doesn't have to be done immediately after the wedding. Social Security is federal, so you can go to any social security office in the country. I started the name change process about 2 and a half months after our wedding because I was going through a background check for a new job and didn't want the name change to extend that process.

Not in the same boat BUT our date is 06/06/20, and we live in Greenville, SC so like an hour from Charlotte! Congrats! I would suggest maybe waiting to change your name until you've officially moved

I would order more than one certified copy of your IL marriage license after you get married. That way you can wait to go to NC, but have all the necessary paperwork you may need to "prove" you are married!
