Naked Cake: Pros and Cons

Anna, on May 11, 2017 at 8:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

We set up our cake tasting for next month so I was getting some ideas together. Really enjoy the aesthetic of the naked cake but not sure how it will taste, especially as someone who enjoys icing. Have you seen it, tried it, heard stories about it? All input welcome Smiley smile

From my research, they dry up quickly so you have to find a baker that specializes in naked cakes. After we weighed out the pros and cons we went with a traditional iced cake because it wasn't worth the fuss and worry to us.

I like frosting myself. And I think that this trend will die out, so down the line your cake and wedding photos will look really dated.

I've heard that naked cakes dry out easily also...

Go with something timeless and get the frosting.

    Edit: clarity.

I agree that they are a fad that I think will pass. I personally am not a fan.

We are getting a naked cake!

I think if you are going with the right cake person and their cake and icings are great I don't think it will matter.

There are different style of naked cakes where they kind of 'dirty' ice the whole cake so it has a bit more icing on it. I believe with naked cakes they place more frosting in the center so it balances it out.

I have also heard that they dry out easily so going with someone experienced with making them is really important. Personally, I would go with a semi-naked cake like Ashley posted since it would have a little more covering on the cake. I do have to wonder what motivates you to get a naked cake if you really like icing.

I hate frosting so I like them. If you're worried about drying out, you can have it delivered during the reception or do a semi-naked.

Not a fan. I have never seen one in the wild that looks any where near as marginally nice as the ones in the styled shoots.

If you love it? Do it. I loves my frosting.

IMO, the icing is the best part of the cake, so Im not really into naked cakes.

I hate frosting. Even as a kid I scraped it off and gave it to my big brother. But...my cake will have fondant just to keep it moist. I know for a fact, I won't touch the icing on the cake, but I will devour the inside! If you love frosting, then a naked cake seems counter productive. Just work with your baker to create a rustic feel for the exterior with all the yummy frosting that you enjoy.

All other concerns aside, why would you want a cake without frosting if you love frosting?

I don't like the look of the naked cake but I would like the taste bc I don't like buttercream frosting and that's what most wedding cakes are!

FH about cried when he found out this was a thing. He said it was a travesty to cake. Needless to say we're going with a buttercream cake.

Honestly, I think it's a fad, and I would go for a more timeless looking cake, but that's me.
