Nacho Bar

Littleoutdoors, on October 2, 2018 at 7:14 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 20

So originally we planned on around 15 people, then decided to just do a giant wedding. So we have around 160 people that are going to attend. We have chosen to do a Nacho Bar for the food served. The beef has been donated to us from the inlaws, and I am just wondering if anyone has done this type of food before? And if so, how much of the supplies were needed so no one goes hungry? This will be the only food other than the cake. Any advice or tips would be helpful thank you!

Unless your wedding is at a non meal time I don’t think just a nacho bar will be enough food.

What about those with food allergies such as gluten or dairy, or vegetarians, vegans, or those eating a low carb diet? IMO that’s not enough food for a wedding and doesn’t take into account guests who don’t or can’t eat what you’re serving.

So most of our guests we hangout with frequently. Non will have issues listed above, so Im not as worried about that. Everyone has been quiet excited about the Nacho bar. Its on a Friday at 4:30 so it is during a time people will be hungry. We have a ton of toppings planned, so the nachos will be in boats with whatever loaded on top.

We chose to do it this way only because of our smaller budget. I understand that is our own fault for choosing a larger wedding, but again I have gotten nothing but excitement about nachos.

I mean do you really think your guests are going to tell you it’s an awful idea to only serve nachos? Nachos aren’t dinner. They’re an appetizer, a late night snack, something you get at the movies- but not dinner.

If I thought my guests would be against this I wouldn't necessarily have chosen it. .We are having a casual wedding since we were talked into having it be bigger, and all of our group are a tightnit casual kind of people who are always together. I am just wondering if someone had an idea on how much of what to get.

    I eat nachos for dinner!!
We love them at our house. I would definitely have cheese dip, you can usually get just that at your fave Mexican restaurant, that's what we do.
You can add rice and beans too, you could
get that from a Mexican restaurant as well.
Maybe do some chicken as well so your guests have a choice.

We are so far going to have:

Different chip types, Sour cream, Salsas, Jalapenos, Onions, Guacamole, Bacon bits, Some type of beans

But the rice and chicken is a good idea too.

    Thank you for your input!

As far as how much, 160 people is a lot of food!
I googled it and it says 1lb of cooked ground beef will be about 3 servings. That's about 54lbs!

The beef was donated, they had butchered some cows and donated our meat from that.

Sorry, but this isn't enough food. See if you can find a BBQ or mexican caterer for cheap.

I honestly love the idea of a nacho bar! Yummm! I personally don’t like salsa but I love tomatoes so that might be something to consider also. I wish I could help with the serving sizes

We do fully loaded nachos for dinner. You will need A LOT to fill people up. For our family of 5 it takes a bag and a half of tortilla chips to feed us when we do nachos. We do ground beef and chicken. Corn, pico, hot salsa verde salsa refried beans, Spanish rice, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, jalapeños, mont jack, Colby jack, sour cream, and nacho cheese sauce. We also have taco sauce to pour on top.

I think this is a fun idea for a cocktail hour! Definitely not for dinner though. If you do this, I’d make sure people know you’re just having a snack/app, not a main meal. I would personally feel gross if I had to eat enough nachos to fill up for dinner lol.

For toppings, definitely do multiple types of meat (ground beef, chicken, shredded pork), beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, queso, sour cream, jalapeños, black olives, scallions, etc...

Also you will need A LOT of all this for 160 people. I honestly don’t know how it’d be feasible to do yourself.

I love nachos so I would be happy to see this but I think of it more as an app or side. Could you maybe create a nacho and taco bar? Tacos feel more like dinner to me, along with nachos, rice and beans on the side. Same ingredients but the tortillas make it a little more filling and feel like a meal.

I think you could make this work for dinner if you expand it to a full Mexican food bar. You can have different bases -- nachos, tortillas, lettuce, rice, and people can load up on toppings. Just nachos doesn't cut it though.

I'm more concerned that it sounds like you plan on catering a party for 160 people without a professional. That's a really bad idea.

I went to one of my god-brother’ wedding a few years ago. He only had snacks/bites. It was a backyard wedding with maybe 75 people. We were all still hungry so we went to eat afterwards but I enjoyed spending the additional time with the family. I didn’t really mind it.
I feel like nachos with tons of topping options should be fine as a main meal if your guests are ok with it. I would maybe add a little more snacks in case they get hungrier than they expect? Small dessert table or something. You could do cookies, popcorn, or donuts/donut wall!

    Hope that helped! Smiley smile
