My Wedding Dress came in!

SoontobeMrs., on March 8, 2017 at 9:11 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

Hi All, My dress finally arrived! I wear size 6 in regular clothes. I tried on many wedding dresses and turns out I'm an 8 in wedding dresses. I tried on a 14 and it fit me GINORMOUS. After going back and forth with the sales lady, we agreed she'd ordered me a size 10 just to be on the safe side. Well it turns out they ordered me a size 14. Because I can have alterations it shouldn't be a problem but it bothers me for a couple of reasons. 1. they lied to me about ordering a smaller size and 2. Parts of the dress are gonna be too big like the bust and that could potentially require extra alterations that could've been avoided had they ordered a smaller size. Am I being a bridezilla? Perhaps. But DON'T lie to me Smiley sad Another thing is will they charge me extra for alterations bc it's big? Maybe. What did you ladies do when you picked up your dress? I feel like it's bringing a baby home lol. Did you leave it at the store till you were ready for alterations?

I am a size 0, and my dress is a 6. it's definitely normal to go up 2-3 sizes in a wedding dress. Did they write size 10 on your original receipt? If so, they need to make it right. If they wrote size 14, they may not be able to do anything. Did they take your measurements also? Hope you are able to get this resolved. You can usually take a dress in at least 3 sizes without worrying about distortion, so you should be okay.

I agree with Future Mrs, check your receipt. If yours says 10, or the measurements of a 10, they need make it right.

I can't see how far out your wedding is, but if your receipt says 10 and you have time I'd make sure they get you a 10

I had a similar thing happen where one size fit like a glove but she was trying to talk me into ordering 3 sizes larger than the size that I was measured as and tried on. It felt like she was coached to do it so they can sell alterations.

That's shady! Double check your receipt. I wouldn't be surprised if theyre trained to get brides to order bigger sizes so they can sell in-house alterations.

I heard that about some shops sell the dresses bigger to have larger alteration bills. Having said that they are "supposed" to order the dress size of your largest measurement. So if your girls came in at a 14 they had to order the 14.

I would definitely check your receipt to see the size that was to be ordered. If they made the mistake, have them rush a dress in.

And, I would also take dress to another seamstress for alterations.

My lady also wanted me to order way bigger then what actually fit me. I finally ordered what fit me, and don't have to do much alterations to it.

Unfortunately this happens too often- In all the weddings I've been in as a bridesmaid, I refused to order what they "measured" me in because the sample I tried fit perfectly. I ordered what I wanted & they make you sign this liability form that says they measured me in "x" size and purchased another.........and guess what, every time they fit perfectly. They definitely sell on alterations. It's such a scam. As others mentioned, check your receipt or any paper work you signed.

They should have measured you and ordered according to your biggest measurement. The dress i tried on was 4 sizes too big according to my measurements. My dress took 8 months to come in- if they ordered the wrong size i would be screwed! They need to make it right it absolutely will be more money in alterations if they ordered it way too big. The place i ordered my wedding dress had me sign a slip on the size we agreed upon ordering so there is no mistakes. I would call them or go in and speak to them.

I had the same problem. I let them know I wanted the next size down and asked to have the paper so that I could place my signature on it that I wanted the change. that way if they got In a different size they would be responsible for the extra charges for alterations.

I also wear an 8, they wanted me to order a 10 and I said no, I rather let the bust out slightly and get the dress hemmed and bustled (which was about 450.00) than to have to have the entire dress taken in, and still need the hem and bustle. I was also appalled that they took my measurements twice and the second time at my alterations appointment I had all my clothes on.....yeah, no...of course everything is two inches or more than the first measurements I am fully dressed?? I was confused on that one especially since she had no issue putting her bare hands on my naked breasts once she was pinning the cups in place to be sewn in. If you can get the smaller size I would recommend going that way but be cautious, call and check the status because my dress was supposed to be a rush and wasn't, now I'm less than 40 days till my wedding and have my fitting after alterations on the 31st, which is cutting it close if things go wrong.

Check your receipt, that is very unfair for them to do.

I am a size 3 in clothes and a size 0 in wedding dress...

If I didn't already feel small enough. It just depends.

@August that's definitely not the norm for wedding dress sizing. I'm normally a 0 and had to order a 4 wedding dress - they had to order the dress according to my largest measurement (hips).

Anyway OP, definitely check your receipt and contract. It does seem pretty shady that they would order it that many sizes too large, but it also could've been an honest mistake. I can't tell when your wedding is but if you have time, I'd give the shop a chance to make it right.

My dress was 3 sizes too big and the store exchanged it. I met with their seamstress and she said to exchange it. My shop does not keep the dresses there, it is hanging in a garment bag in my closet until I take for alterations
