My wedding dress came in.... And i hate it!!

Kay, on July 18, 2019 at 12:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
The day I initially tried on my dress, it was about 5 sizes to big. So of course the dress was pulled and clamped, but when I looked in the mirror I loved it! It’s seemed to taper in the right place and the waist line appeared dropped which was my only must have! However, when I went to pick up my dress, and tried it on in my size, I immediately burst into tears (I feel bad for the poor girl helping me. She took off and I never saw her again) It had the high waist line I tried desperately to avoid, hugged all the wrong areas, and there is no way to alter it. Now I have the unfortunate tasks of looking for a new dress 3 months before my wedding. And... I need to figure out how to sell the one I bought. Any one else have something similar happen to them? If so, do you have any recommendations on where or how you sold your dress? Did you have to discount it from your original purchase price? Thanks!!

There are many places online to sell the dress, but you most definitely will have to discount it from the purchase price. Try Stillwhite, Facebook Marketplace, Poshmark.

I am so, so sorry this has happened to you! Though I've never been in this situation, there are plenty of places to sell. Stillwhite.com comes to mind. Most of the dresses on there are indeed discounted, but I believe you set your own price. I wish you the best of luck!

Have you taken it to an alterations place? Are you sure it absolutely cannot be altered? If you are set on selling it, definitely try the suggestions above from PP. You will definitely have to discount it, unfortunately.

I'm sorry you hate your dress, unfortunately you will probably have to sell it at a loss...probably close to 50% of of the purchase price.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you! Have you asked the store you bought it from if you can exchange it? Not a refund, but just an exchange? They maybe able to give you a credit of some sort since there were no alterations done on the dress.

I’m so sorry this happened to you! My advice before giving up and getting a totally different dress would be to find a really really good alterations person or dress maker in your area, take your dress to them and see what they can do. If they say they cannot do what you want, then I would look into purchasing something off the rack.

Does that shop have discontinued dresses? They might be able to cut you an amazing deal because they feel bad.

50%??? Yeah... that’s not happening... people sell used designer shoes on poshmark for more than 50% of the original purchase price!

The alterations lady is there onsite. There’s no way to alter the waistline 😞

The store manager felt horrible! She’s trying to call the designer and see if they’d be willing to take it back. It’s a long shot... but I appreciate her trying!

I’m sorry about your dress, but definitely look at consignment shops for a new one! I went to 2 looking for my dress and they had a decent selection. Mine was actually new with tags and a little big so I’m in the process of getting it altered now. I’m not sure how much you can actually get back for you dress, but you could definitely sell yours at one of these stores too!

I sold my 2nd dress at PreownedWeddingDress, it just wasn’t me and found my dream dress. The process to sell it was very easy, they walk you through it. I had to sell at a steep discount but I just wanted to be rid of it. Good photos in natural light will sell your dress faster. Larger sizes and unaltered(unhemmed) will also sell faster since more brides can fit into them and alter to their bodies.

However, could you see if the salon will simply allow an exchange? Would you be ok with a sample dress if they offered it to you in exchange for your dress? Some salons offer this option.

Unless your dress is from a recognized and beloved designer(preferably high end) I agree you will have to sell your dress for 50% off. There’s just too many dresses for brides to choose from on those sites, why would they pay more for yours when they don’t have to? Wedding dress resale is a harsh market, you’re not only competing against other brides but also professional resellers(that brides prefer)

Explore your options with that salon.

Thanks for the website! I’ll check into that as well. However, if brides on the site expect 50% off a brand new dress that hasn’t even left the bridal salon, that may not be the right site for me. I talked with the store manager again this afternoon, and she’s still trying to contact the designer and figure out what options we have. If I do have to sell, the salon will place the dress on a mannequin for me and take pics under the salon lighting. It’s a very popular designer gown, which almost every bridal salon in my area carries. When I told her people were telling me to sell for 50% and expressed my concern (I haven’t even paid the remaining balance. I’ve only paid 50% myself at this point) she laughed and said don’t worry. Used dresses are sold for half off she said, not brand new dresses still in the bag! Thanks again ladies for taking the time to respond though! I really appreciate the input!
